It wasn’t pretty but Rockdale City Suns were able to hold on to a 2-1 PlayStation®4 National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s win against Blacktown Spartans at Ilinden Sports Centre on Sunday.
The Suns broke through in the opening stages courtesy of a Dylan Macallister strike before Andre Carle levelled the scores for Blacktown.
A late Alec Urosevski goal won the game in the 77th minute for Rockdale as they continued their climb up the ladder.
Dylan Macallister opened the scoring in the 7th minute when he masterfully headed home an exquisite cross from Toufic Almeddine.
Shu Susaki should have levelled for the Spartans when Nick Petrillo played a weak back pass to David Bradasevic. The nippy winger was able to run on to the ball but looped his curling effort over the bar.
The visitors found Rockdale a difficult opponent to confront but Andre Carle was able to level the scores in the 20th minute with a powerful shot.
Carle’s goal lifted his Blacktown side and they were soon on the attack again but were unable to capitalise.
Futa Nakamura chanced his luck with a fiercely struck shot from the edge of the area that had Bradasevic down at full stretch. Blacktown was on the ascendancy at this point and didn’t allow Rockdale to settle back into their stride.
Josh Tanner did well down the left and centred for Jordan Crighton who forced Bradacevic into a fine save at his near post in the 33rd minute.
Rockdale’s sluggish transition into defence allowed Blacktown to remain on the attack but the visitors couldn’t capitalise before the half time break.
It was Crighton again in the 59th minute that forced Bradasevic into another fine save, this time pushing the ball over the bar after the Blacktown striker cut in from the left.
Blacktown’s transition into attack was superb in going forward and back in numbers and at pace as a unit. It was proving a very effective tool in their arsenal until Alex Urosevski scrambled home in the 73rd minute to give the Suns the lead for the second time in the game. It was effectively his last touch when replaced by Hristijan Tanoski.
It was a bitter pill for Blacktown to take but the story of their season to date.
Tanoski had a shot cleared off the line in the 84th minute but It mattered little to the Spartans as they once more found themselves on the wrong end of a 2-1 defeat after a battling performance.
“It’s the story of our season where we create plenty of chances but cannot find the net,” Spartans coach Ben De Haan said.
“That’s it in a nutshell for us. We’ve battled well and lose out to what we feel looked like an offside goal. However, that’s football and we’ll just have to keep going and turn the corner.
“I’m certain we’ll start tucking a few of the chances away we are creating.”
Rockdale coach Paul Reid lamented his side’s poor performance despite clinching the win.
“It was probably our worst performance of the season to be honest,” he said.
“We knew it would be a hard game for us against the Spartans, they are a good side and probably deserved to win the game. I’m proud of the way the boys dug in and showed we can grind out a result and win ugly if we need to.
“It was important we kept pressure on those above us and at this time of the season we’re just happy to take the points tonight.”

APIA score vital win over Wolves
Two second half goals has helped APIA Leichhardt Tigers to a 3-1 PlayStation®4 National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s win over the Wollongong Wolves at WIN Stadium.
First half goals from Tasuku Sekiya and Nicholas Bernal were cancelled out by strikes from Nathan Millgate and Nick Olsen as the travelling side left Wollongong with all three points.
It was a very subdued opening to the game with most of the battle in the middle of the field. Neither side could conjure a chance in the opening stages before a cross in the 9th minute fell to APIA midfielder Nick Olsen but he could only spray his shot just wide.
Two minutes later the visitors should have opened the scoring. Corey Biczo made a long run down the right touchline before whipping a cross but Tasuku Sekiya could only blast his shot against the upright.
It was all APIA in the opening stages and in the 15th minute a cross found an open Nathan Elasi but he missed his chance and headed wide.
The ball seemed camped at the Wolves defensive end and in the 17th minute APIA almost got the first goal of the game when Sekiya’s shot from outside the box grazed the outside of the post.
Seven minutes later the travelling side should have again gotten on the scoresheet when a neat ball into the box found danger man Sekiya but his shot was cut off at the last second.
APIA Leichhardt dominated play with the home side getting their chances on the counter.
In the 40th minute a defensive lapse from the Wolves ended with Sekiya curling the ball from outside the box and into the back of the net for the opening goal of the game.
Four minutes later against the run of play, the home side pulled one back through Nicholas Bernal to give the home side hope heading into the interval.
Right on the brink of the half-time whistle, Bernal troubled the APIA goalkeeper when his shot from well outside the box was smartly saved.
It was a slow start to the second half but opened up in the 52nd minute when a cross from the right found Nathan Millgate at the back post to put the visitors in front again.
Wollongong almost levelled within minutes. Substitute Brett Wilson ran down the right touchline before crossing to Bernal but his shot was saved well by APIA goalkeeper Ryan Norval.
Substitute Wilson injected some life into the home sides attack and when he cut inside on 58 minutes he looked to have found some space but his shot sprayed over the crossbar for a goal kick.
The home side was starting to build some pressure and in the 63rd minute Brendan Griffin was left with acres of space but he could only put his shot from outside the box over.
A neat passage of play in the 65th minute from the visitors led to their third goal from Nick Olsen as he put the ball away from six yards out to make it 3-1.
In the 83rd minute, Tasuku Sekiya had the chance to put the icing on the cake when he was able to receive the ball and get himself one-on-one with Justin Pasfield but his shot was saved.
The Wolves then had a final chance in the 90th minute as Zachary MacKenzie made his way into the box but his header just missed the goal as the visitors held on to their two goal advantage.
After the match APIA head Coach Danial Cummins was happy with the performance despite his concerns of letting the two goal lead slip.
“The boys have been working hard and it’s starting to come together. We’ve still got a bit of work to do with our execution but I can’t fault their effort,” he said.
“I’m always worried. I think Jake (Wollongong Wolves head coach Jacob Timpano) has them working well and I’ve seen a fair bit of Wollongong so they’re a good side and they work hard. We needed to be switched on.”
On the other hand, Wollongong Wolves head coach Jacob Timpano remained positive despite his sides run of poor reslts.
“APIA probably had the better of us early on in the first half but I think we got ourselves back into the game. We probably got a deserved goal back before the break,” he said.
“We’ve just got to regroup and I don’t think we’re too far off. We just have to keep plugging away and in a positive we got a win in the 20s today and a draw in the 18s so we’re not getting outplayed so I think a result is not far away.”
For the winners, APIA Leichhardt Tigers, they return home next Saturday night to face Rockdale City Suns FC while the Wollongong Wolves hit the road to meet Manly United FC next Sunday.

Manly knocks Hakoah for Six
Manly United showed their credentials as potential PlayStation®4 NPL NSW Men’s champions with a stunning 6-1 victory over Hakoah Sydney City East at Hensley Athletic Field on Sunday.
Manly was at their attacking best with Dejan Pandurevic scoring in the first minute of the game before Sam Gallagher, Luke Giverin and Brendan Cholakian finished the onslaught.
It was a one sided romp with Hakoah’s only saving grace a 35th minute goal to Kevin Lopes.
With a Waratah Cup final on the horizon, Manly are hitting their straps.
The first half belonged to Manly, who opened the scoring in under a minute. Parkhouse used his pace to beat his man down the left flank and sent in a tantalising cross that was struck home beautifully on the half-volley by Pandurevic.
In the fourth minute, Luke Giverin hit a ripper of a shot only to be denied by the bar. Indeed, within the first four minutes, Manly had three shots on target for a return of one goal, one denied by the bar and one saved by Hakoah keeper Anthony Costa.
It wasn’t long before the visitor’s struck again, with a Sam Gallagher effort in the 13th minute somehow trickled over the line. Even at this early stage of the match, Hakoah had been reduced to chasing shadows.
In the 19th minute Hakoah eventually offered some resistance, with Lee Jones causing some concern in the Manly goalmouth after lobbing in a dangerous cross from the right. The ensuing corner was cleared away to safety.
Manly continued to dominate. Their crisp passing and impressive interplay caused Hakoah plenty of problems.
It didn’t take long for Manly to extend their lead to three, when in the 28th minute Luke Giverin struck home a pearler from long range.
The match began to look like a training run for the visitors but against the run of play, Hakoah gave their small band of supporters something to cheer. Kevin Lopes struck home a beautiful goal from outside the box to bridge the gap to 3-1.
But the comeback was short-lived as Giverin set up Brendan Cholakian, who blasted home a screamer to give Manly a 4-1 lead. Thirty-eight minutes played. Five goals scored. What a game.
Not surprisingly the two teams went to the break with Manly leading 4-1.
Immediately after the restart, Hakoah showed some spirit and launched an attack on the Manly goal. Referee Kurt Ams awarded the home side a penalty, but striker Neil Jablonski slammed the spot kick onto the crossbar. A golden opportunity missed.
As if to punish Jablonski for his miss, Manly’s Brendan Cholakian grabbed his second goal from close range in the 52nd minute after a perfect low cross from Parkhouse, to give Manly a commanding 5-1 lead.
Two minutes later the visitor’s were at it again, with Luke Giverin snaring his second for an astonishing 6-1 lead. The match was turning into an exhibition, with the pace and creativity displayed by Parkhouse and Pandurevic in particular, causing Hakoah plenty of grief.
In the 64th minute, Richie Cardozo rattled the post with a screamer and a moment later, brushed the bar with yet another shot seemingly propelled by jet fuel. Hakoah were holding on by the skin of their teeth and were fortunate not to be more than 6-1 in arrears.
No more goals were scored but Manly continued to show their class, which not only proved to be way too much for the home side, but also demonstrated to the fans that when it comes to championship ambitions, the seasiders are the real deal. Paul Dee’s team passed with precision, ran with pace and showed a skillset way beyond the comprehension of their opponents. Which, given Hakoah’s recent good form and ability to trouble any side in the competition, was a total mystery. Perhaps it was just one of those days.
At the final whistle most of the Hakoah fans had departed the homely grandstand at Hensley Athletic Field and as Manly sang their victory song, the locals were left to wonder just where they had gone wrong.
As expected, Manly United coach Paul Dee was delighted with his side’s performance, especially given their midweek Waratah. Cup semi-final had gone to extra time.
“It was an excellent performance,” Dee said. “I was very pleased with the way the team played, we were very sharp. We moved the ball very well, created a lot of scoring opportunities and showed some desperation in defence. It was a complete performance.
“It could’ve been more if we were a little bit more ruthless but the boys obviously enjoyed that game and there were some outstanding individual performances. In a win like that it’s very hard to single out anyone, but it was really hard to miss the performances of Dejan Panduervic and Adam Parkhouse. I think they just terrorised the defence and had exceptional games.”
Dee added that Pandurevic, 19, and Parkhouse, 22, would be deserving of an opportunity to take the step up to the A-League.
“They deserve at least a trial in an A-League setup, they’re that good. They’re young, the take instructions, they’re organised and they’re committed to what they’re doing.”
Meanwhile, Hakoah coach Mark Robertson wasn’t so upbeat.
“I think from the very first whistle our team was off the pace,” he said. “And that’s me being kind. And once a few of their players got momentum, they hurt us badly.
“As a coach you can only ever take it game by game. And if I was to be that naïve as a coach to look back at the games we’ve won, instead of concentrating purely on tonight, then that would be very silly of me. I have no answers for any of the boys. I have no answers for myself for how poorly the scoreline looked, and all I can say is that as a club we go back to the drawing and we work towards Blacktown City next week.”

Round 16 Review – PS4 NPL NSW Men’s U20
Bonnyrigg’s 8-0 win over reigning champions Blacktown City steals the headlines from another riveting weekend of action in the PlayStation®4 NPL NSW Men’s U20 as the White Eagles leapfrog Sutherland to go outright first.
The Sharks battled to a 1-1 draw at Melita Stadium in the Match of the Round, while Manly United eased their finals concerns with a 3-1 victory at Hakoah Sydney City East.
Match of the Round
Parramatta 1-1 Sutherland Sharks, Sunday 1.00pm at Melita Stadium
Parramatta have kept their finals hopes alive after fighting out a 1-1 draw against competition heavyweights Sutherland Sharks after Christo Hannah’s deflected effort was cancelled out by James Andrew’s penalty at Melita Stadium.
It was a must-win encounter for the home side who largely matched Sutherland blow for blow but were unable to convert their graft and promise on the transition into end product as a below par Sharks side lost valuable ground in their premiership assault.
With Bonnyrigg White Eagles surging over Sutherland in the competition standings the evening before as a result of their 8-0 destruction of Blacktown City it was always going to be an unforgiving assignment for the travelling Sharks and with Parramatta fighting for their competition lives it was an edgy and hard-fought ninety minutes at Melita Stadium.
Parramatta started brightly and Christo Hannah cemented a dream start for the hosts when he fired home a scrappy opener. Nicholas Chymiak kept the Sutherland defence occupied after tussling with Sharks defenders on the penalty spot before the aid of a heavy deflection saw Hannah’s strike from the edge of the box rifled through a crowd of bodies and past an outwitted Nikolas Loe.
Sutherland had a few chances on the counter attack in a first half where the speed of James Andrew was frequently employed. Although Parramatta largely controlled proceedings in the first half the eagerness of the Sharks frontman to burst into open space left behind by the Parramatta rearguard began to represent a growing danger for Mark Zecchin’s ranks.
And it was no surprise that after several near misses this adopted route toward goal eventually resulted in a deserved equalizer for the visitors when Andrew skipped beyond the Parramatta defence only to be felled by Melita shot stopper Jayden Diacono.
Diacono received a caution for the misdemeanour and Andrew found the side netting with a convincingly dispatched penalty from the resulting spot kick to bring the scores level.
Chances were few and far between in the second half as the competition leaders began to grow more convincingly into the contest.
Andrew saw what was to be a rare clean sight on goal disappear as a result of some valiant Parramatta defending while Patrick O’Shea hit the crossbar with a fierce drive from outside the box as the Eagles defence retreated further into their own half.
Sutherland attacker Jeremy Cox had orchestrated much of his side’s second half momentum and he enjoyed the best chance of the half when found unmarked at the back post only to be denied by an excellent smothering save from Diacono.
It took Parramatta until the dying moments of the second half to forge an opportunity of their own but Andreas Vais saw his tame header sail over the crossbar as both sides settled for a share of the spoils.
Despite another frustrating draw it was a positive showing from an ever-improving Parramatta side according to coach Mark Zecchin.
“I can’t fault the boys, we’ve played a few top sides over the past couple of weeks and it was another good result” said the Parramatta stalwart.
Sutherland’s Allan Edmondson was content with his side’s showing a week away from next round’s crunch match with Bonnyrigg White Eagles.
“We played some attractive football in the second half and were on top of them at the end.
“Parramatta are a good side, we will move on during the week and prepare for Bonnyrigg next weekend.”

Bonnyrigg White Eagles 8-0 Blacktown City, 5.00pm at Bonnyrigg Sports Centre
Bonnyrigg announced their premiership credentials in stunning fashion when the White Eagles thrashed 10-man Blacktown City 8-0 at Bonnyrigg Sports Centre on Saturday evening.
Having hammered Blacktown 4-0 at Lilys earlier on in the season Stephen Sigmund’s side made it a day to forget for City who slipped further down the table after the biggest defeat of the PlayStation®4 NPL NSW Men’s U20 season.
The reigning champions were reduced to a man down on the cusp of halftime when Issam Elkhaldi received his marching orders and were subsequently swept away by the home side with Luke Ivanovic and Andre Guzman each claiming a hattrick. Taylor McDonald and Harry Tucker completed the rout for the hosts who moved into outright first position on the competition ladder.
Sunday
Sydney Olympic 1-2 Sydney United 58, 1.00pm at Belmore Sports Ground
Sydney United 58 upset Sydney Olympic 2-1 at Belmore Sports Ground to put a severe dent in the finals hopes of the Belmore side who missed their chance to gain more ground on the top six with a wasteful display at home.
Jack Stewart’s brace was enough for the visiting United 58 who improved their chances of getting off the foot of the table with the win, with Davor Bajsic’s side trailing eleventh-placed Rockdale by two points.
Hakoah Sydney City East 1-3 Manly United, 3.00pm at Hensley Athletic Field
Manly United broke a four match winless run at Hensley Athletic Field beating Hakoah Sydney City East 3-1 to maintain their position among the top contenders for the premiership.
Andrew Christiansen’s side had goalscorers Alexander Partridge, Sipan Berti and Matt Zanon to thank as United returned to second position on the ladder.
Jordan Swibel’s eighth goal of the season proved to be in consolation for Hakoah Sydney City East who drop outside the top six with the loss.
Rockdale City Suns 1-1 Blacktown Spartans, 3.00pm at Ilinden Sports Centre
There was no separating Rockdale City Suns and Blacktown Spartans at Ilinden Sports Centre as both sides played out a 1-1 draw.
Kody Maude was on the scoresheet for the home side but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Spartans from claiming the point and a drawn result that ultimately leaves the finals hopes of both in tatters with seven rounds remaining.
Wollongong Wolves 1-0 APIA Leichhardt Tigers, 3.00pm at WIN Stadium
Ricky Zucco’s first half goal was enough for Wollongong Wolves to outlast APIA Leichhardt Tigers as the South Coast side ran out 1-0 winners at WIN Stadium.
Alfredo Esteves’ men overtake the Lambert Park outfit on the ladder with the victory as they move within three points of fourth-placed Blacktown City.

Round 16 Review – PS4 NPL NSW Men’s
Round 16 of the PlayStation®4 National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s competition is in the bag with Manly United the big winners.
Paul Dee’s side put six past a hapless Hakoah outfit to emphasise their position as the competition’s entertainers.
Sydney United 58 was once again in the winner’s circle while APIA also returned to winning ways.
It was a grand final rematch in this week’s Match of the Round with Bonnyrigg White Eagles hosting Blacktown City.
Match of the Round
Bonnyrigg White Eagles 2 – Blacktown City 2 at Bonnyrigg Sports Centre
Neither side would give an inch as Blacktown City and Bonnyrigg White Eagles played out tough 2-2 draw at Bonnyrigg Sports Centre on Saturday.
The PlayStation®4 National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s Round 16 clash was a battle of attrition as last year’s grand final combatants went head to head once again.
An Early Travis Major goal set the tone for the match but it was cancelled out in the 27th minute when Bonnyrigg’s Aaron Peterson hit the back of the net.
Mitchell Mallia gave the visitors the advantage not long after the half time interval but Yuta Kokado’s 68th minute strike ensured both teams went home with a point.
Sydney Olympic FC 0 – Sydney United 58 2 at Belmore Sports Ground
Sydney United 58 continued their dominance of the PlayStation®4 National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s competition as they grinded out a 2-0 victory over Sydney Olympic at Belmore Sports Ground on Sunday.
Second half goals to Panni Nikas and Chris Payne was enough for United 58 to collect all three points against their traditional rivals.
Sydney United started slowly but finally hit their straps as the match went on with Olympic unable to hit back on the scoreboard.
Despite the loss, Sydney Olympic gave a debut cap to former Schalke 04 attacker Rene Klingensburg who impressed in his first start.
United 58 stretches its lead at the top of table with Blacktown City now six points behind.
Parramatta FC 3 – Sutherland Sharks 0 at Melita Stadium
Early goals from Joshua Symons and Marco Sama set up a routine victory for Parramatta who beat Sutherland Sharks 3-1 in their PlayStation®4 NPL NSW Men’s Round 16 clash at Melita Stadium.
Sutherland trailed by two goals at the break thanks to the quick-fire double from the Parramatta duo but halved the deficit immediately through Tomihiro Kajiyama’s spot-kick after Eagles defender Ibrahim Haydar was pulled up for a foul inside the box.
However any hopes of a comeback were quelled immediately by the impressive Sama who claimed his second shortly after the Japanese playmaker had pulled one back for the visitors, easing any potential worries for the hosts who cruised to victory untroubled.
The two finals outsiders clashed on a chilly Sunday afternoon hoping to further their finals credentials but Franco Consentino’s side emerged with all the plaudits once more after backing up last weekend’s upset defeat of Blacktown City with another impressive showing at home.
Hakoah Sydney City East 1 – Manly United 6 at Hensley Athletic Field
Manly United potential PlayStation®4 NPL NSW Men’s championship credential on display with a stunning 6-1 victory over Hakoah Sydney City East at Hensley Athletic Field on Sunday.
Rockdale City Suns 2 – Blacktown Spartans 1 at Ilinden Sports Centre
It wasn’t pretty but Rockdale City Suns were able to hold on to a 2-1 PlayStation®4 National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s win against Blacktown Spartans at Ilinden Sports Centre on Sunday.
The Suns broke through in the opening stages courtesy of a Dylan Macallister strike before Andre Carle levelled the scores for Blacktown.
A late Alec Urosevski goal won the game in the 77th minute for Rockdale as they continued their climb up the ladder.
It was a much improved performance from Blacktown Spartans who could’ve easily stolen the win.
Wollongong Wolves 1 – APIA Leichhardt 3 at WIN Stadium
Two second half goals has helped APIA Leichhardt Tigers to a 3-1 PlayStation®4 National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s win over the Wollongong Wolves at WIN Stadium.
It was a dominant performance from APIA Leichhardt with goals to Tasuku Sekiya, Nathan Millgate and Nick Olsen securing all three points for the Lambert Park side.
Nicolas Bernal’s first half strike was the only goal the home side was score in an at time sluggish performance.
Wollongong did have their moments but poor finishing cost the home side when it mattered most.
