PS4 NPL NSW Men’s side Rockdale City Suns made it back to back wins by taking out the 2016 edition of the Maso Cup.
The tournament pitted teams from across the country including Melbourne based outfits Preston Lions, Sydenham Park, and Altona Magic, Queensland based Sunshine Lions, Hunter based Broadmeadow Magic and Newcastle Suns, Queanbeyan FC from the ACT, llawarra teams Wollongong United, Cringila Lions and Shell Cove Barbarians and Sydney based Rockdale City Suns, Arncliffe Scots, Bankstown City Lions and Yagoona Lions.
The 2016 edition also featured an over 35 division and a women’s edition.
Despite heavy rain in the lead-up to the event, co-hosts Wollongong United and Cringila Lions did well to ensure games proceeded.
In the main competition, it was a dominant performance by the Suns, played before a large and vocal crowd across the 2 days of competition.
After finishing top of their group, the Suns defeated rising Victorian outfit Sydenham Park 2-1 in the semi-final.
In the final, it was the Suns who won 2-0 over co-hosts and reigning Illawarra Premier League champions, Wollongong United, courtesy of goals from new recruits Blake Riciutto and Peter Makrillos.
The tournament also saw the debut of fellow new recruit Alex Canak.
The Suns, led by 2016 skipper Daniel Petkovski, will be looking to build on their first up showing in the coming weeks with several trial games against fellow NPL teams.
In the over 35’s division, the Rockdale side, which including notable former players including Bill Pilovski, Pece Apolevski and Alex Kotevich, were unfortunate in losing the final in a thrilling penalty shoot-out.
The 2017 edition will be returning to Sydney before the 2018 edition which will be held in Melbourne.
