Sasa Macura: Grand Final veteran
Playing in grand finals has become the norm for Sash Macura.
Sunday’s decider versus APIA from 4pm at Leichhardt Oval will be his fourth successive big dance in the PlayStation4 National Premier Leagues NSW men’s one competition.
The elegant Manly United midfielder defected from Blacktown City FC late last year, a decision which baffled many in football circles given the success he enjoyed at Lily Homes Stadium.
Macura acknowledged it was a bold move, but one he doesn’t regret.
“I’m blown away by how professional the set up is at Manly given it isn’t fulltime,” he said.
“The facilities at Cromer Park are second to none, and the squad Paul (Dee) built which Warren (Grieve) took over is a very good one.
“I’m not at all surprised we have reached the grand final – now we have to go out there and win it.”
Another factor in Macura becoming a Manly United player was geography.
He lives in neighbouring Warriewood, so it is safe to assume he isn’t missing driving multiple times a week to train to Seven Hills.
When asked who will be United’s x-factor this weekend, Macura pointed to evergreen striker Dylan Macallister.
“He is a good man, and such a smart player,” he said.
“All the boys joke around and call him dad because of his age (35), and he just laughs.
“Dylan has had such a terrific career, his longevity in football has been no accident.
“He has been great as an outlet up front, he has the ability to change the game in an instant, I always look to play him in when we are attacking.”
Macura also revealed he doesn’t expect his team to be gripped by nerves come kick-off.
“Every game in the finals series for us has been sudden death, so we are used to pressure,” he said.
“We know we can perform in big games.
“We also know what threats APIA offer, they are a good side, they won the league for a reason.
“I’ll be telling the boys pre-game to back themselves and just try to keep things simple.
“We deserve to be playing on this stage.”
