Bonnyrigg White Eagles breathed life into their 2018 season over the weekend by finally breaking their duck with a slender 1-0 victory over Wollongong Wolves.

Determined to leave a torrid opening seven rounds behind, cunning striker and Futsalroo Shervin Adeli worked his socks off at WIN Stadium as his side sought to shake off the stigma of their winless run.

They did just that, showing great character to dig deep and create the luck that until Sunday had evaded them at both ends of the pitch.

With weight lifted off their shoulders and belief infectiously spreading throughout the squad, Adeli and co will look to kick on in immediate search of their second win.

“It had been a bit frustrating,” remarked Adeli.

“I think we deserved to win a couple of the games that we were unable to, so getting that win was important as everyone is now more pumped.

“We’ve got back that much needed excitement once again and we’re looking to build on that.

“Everyone had missed winning and we’d sort of forgotten that feeling, so now that the feeling has returned we want to get another win this weekend and carry on from there.

“We know it’s early in the season and we 100% believe we can build on from here which is very important.”

The timing of Bonnyrigg’s first win was impeccable ahead of this weekend’s highly anticipated derby against Sydney United 58; a clash that carries enough weight without the added pressure of shaking off an unwanted winless streak.

Brian Brown’s men will undoubtedly look to carry last weekend’s positive energy into Sunday’s big match.

“It’s good timing as United lost last week,” said Adeli.

“We picked up our first win, so the momentum is with us.

“Obviously, it’s a massive game for the club against Sydney United, I think it’s the biggest derby in the league so we’re really looking forward to it.”

Adeli signed for the White Eagles from APIA Leichhardt Tigers in 2017’s winter transfer window, bringing with him the impeccable touch and control of a seasoned futsal player.

The enigmatic striker represented the Futsalroos at the 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Colombia, an incredible experience that pitted Adeli against the likes of Brazil and their legendary forward Falcão.

The skillset of the five-a-side game has greatly benefited Adeli’s outdoor game as his technique and creativity enable him to repeatedly produce something out of nothing.

“Playing futsal is obviously a lot smaller in terms of space,” explained Adeli.

“Having that background when I’m on the pitch helps as when I get into tight areas I don’t feel any pressure and feel comfortable to get and keep the ball for my team before the pass and move.

“I think it’s had a good impact for quick thinking and close control.

“It also helps me to get out of tight areas or create something out of smaller spaces.”

Be sure to see Adeli and Bonnyrigg White Eagles take on Sydney United 58 in the derby at Bonnyrigg Sports Centre this Sunday at 3pm.
