The Bonnyrigg White Eagles picked up all three points in the local derby, defeating Sydney United 58 2-1 at Bonnyrigg Sports Ground in round eight of the NPL NSW Men’s competition.

It was a huge victory for the White Eagles who followed up with their second successive victory while for United 58, it was Jason Culina’s second successive loss.

United 58 took to the field with Yianni Fragogiannis starting for the first time this year but they had to do it all minus their star player Panny Nikas who has taken off to Italy for three weeks on a coaching journey while Glen Trifiro battled the flu and was ruled out pre-game.

The home side opened the scoring midway through the first half with a header by Ben Tosi before Shervin Adeli doubled the lead in the second half, following up on his missed penalty.

Substitute Sam Perre got on the scoresheet himself late in the game for United from a penalty of his own.

Matt Sim had the first chance after 13 minutes shooting toward the far post but his effort went inches wide.

The home side went the other way in the 17th minute and Ben Tosi hit his shot just wide.

A minute later Ray Miller received the ball on the left, took his defender on and shot toward Manos, only for the United keeper to tip the ball over the bar with an amazing save.

It was United 58’s best chance of the game after 24 minutes.

Matt Sim crossed a delightful ball for Patrick Antelmi but the striker’s powerful header was easy pickings for David Bradasevic.

Chris Payne then hit an effort from distance which whizzed passed the top corner.

The White Eagles went up the other end and found the lead with 26 minutes on the clock.

The in-form Bradie Smith crossed a fine ball to the far post as the late arriving Tosi found his first goal in Bonnyrigg colours, heading into the back of the net.

Only a minute later and the home side almost doubled their advantage.

Miller, who was creating problems on the left, tried to catch Manos out with a cheeky lob but the keeper reacted well, tipping the ball over the bar.

Ten minutes before half time and again the home side went close.

A great cross from Jewook Woo found Adeli at the far post but the striker headed poorly with the ball going wide.

Manos kept the score at 1-0 with an incredible save on 39 minutes.

Ray Miller found Woo at the far post with the Bonnyrigg faithful all on their feet, only for Manos to make an instinct save.

United went the other way and somehow didn’t equalise.

Antelmi was clean through on Bradasevic but miraculously miss-kicked his effort before Yianni Perkatis shot wide.

Stand-in skipper Petar Markovic almost had the away side level six minutes after the break, picking up a loose ball on the edge of the area following a corner.

He beat his first defender with a fake shot before the home side somehow cleared the ball off the line.

The visitors began the second half better as Antelmi tested Bradasevic again, but the White Eagles keeper saved well.

It was to prove costly though as the White Eagles extended their lead in the 66th minute.

The away side’s defence got caught out with a bouncing ball as Aaron Peterson ran onto it before Manos collided with him, giving Kris Griffiths-Jones no option but to award a penalty to Brian Brown’s side.

Adeli stepped up to take the spot kick with Manos guessing the right way but the White Eagles attacker reacted first, tapping in the rebound to make it 2-0.

Manos was visibly upset with his men for not following in after the spot kick was saved.

Jordan Roberts had a chance from a set piece fifteen minutes from time but again Bradasevic saved well.

Late drama took shape as Matt Sim was brought down in the box by Smith with the right back given his marching orders.

Perre stepped up and despite Bradasevic going the right way, he hit the back of the net.

It proved only a consolation goal as the full-time whistle soon followed much to the satisfaction of the home fans.
