Suns Out To Prove, They Aren’t Just Making Up Numbers
Rockdale City Suns may have only narrowly snuck into the finals in fifth position, but star striker Alec Urosevski is adamant they will be more than just making up the numbers when they take on Blacktown City on Saturday night.
A difficult start to the campaign had the Suns closer to relegation than championship glory, but an impressive turnaround over the second half of the campaign has helped the Paul Reid coached side qualify for finals football.
While consistent results haven’t come easily this year for the side from Ilinden Sports Centre, Striker Urosevski has been one constant for the Suns.
Urosevski has scored 10 goals this season and could have easily had more if not for a leg injury.
Rockdale’s attack has been one of the leagues best but they have been hamstrung by their defence which is of the league’s worst.
Nevertheless, Urosevski is confident they have what it takes to make a deep run in the finals.
“I think it’s only natural that people will write us off because we are the lowest ranked team,” he said.
“But everyone knows that there is more to knockout football than form and rankings.
“We have a really good group of boys who can beat any team on their day so I’m really confident we can cause a few surprises.”
Coming into Saturday’s game, Urosevski admitted his team will need a big lift in their game from recent weeks, but is determined to do his part to keep them in the contest.
“Scoring three or more goals a game each week is just not realistic at this stage of the competition so there is that pressure on us to sort ourselves out defensively,” he said.
“We have improved significantly since the start of the season but there is still work to be done.
“Teams will try to mark attacking players like myself out of the game in the finals so it makes finding the back of the net all the more difficult.”
It will be the second straight year Rockdale travels to Lily Homes Stadium to play Blacktown City in the first week of the finals.
However, Urosevski is not looking into it too much.
“Our focus has to be on what’s in front of us. I tend not to look at opposition teams too much instead concentrating on my own performances,” he said.
“There is always a different feeling to finals football and hopefully it can bring out the best in our team.
“It is sure to be a very tough game but I think we have what it takes to cause an upset.”
