New Wollongong Wolves coach David Carney wasted no time in recruiting his first two new faces for the 2023 National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s season with Nenad Vekic and Walter Scott set to call WIN Stadium home.

Vekic, a 32-year-old goalkeeper, joins the Wolves from Marconi Stallions where he spent the last 5 seasons.

Vekic was excited to be joining the Wolves and was keen for something different.

“I’m really keen for a fresh start and that’s the whole reason I’ve signed for the Wolves. It’s a great opportunity to be at a great club with so much history. It’s also great to be a part of a club that is looking to push and achieve great things. Hopefully I can rub off some of that experience that I’ve got and help the club elevate to that next level,” Vekic said.

Scott, a 23-year-old left back, joins the Wolves from APIA Leichhardt.

He has also had stints with A-League clubs Perth Glory, Wellington Phoenix and Macarthur FC.

Scott is eager to utilise his professional experience and make the left-fullback position his own under Carney.

“I’m absolutely buzzing to get down here and work with a great group of lads. Wollongong is a massive club with a lot of history and to establish myself here for the next few years and push on with my dream to become a professional footballer is really important for me,” Scott said.

Coach David Carney said he was extremely happy to secure the services of players who would fill key positions for the side.

“With Nenad, it was extremely important to get that experience in such a key position as goalkeeper and vital for the young side we are looking to build,” Carney said.

Carney added, “We needed to strengthen and balance the left side of our defensive and attacking set up. Walter has the potential to add that element to the squad. In modern football, those positions are important particularly in terms of how I want us to play.”

The club has re-signed Lachlan Scott, Banri Kanaizumi and Marcus Beattie and are looking at obtaining several others from its 2022 squad.
