Wolves star Lachlan Scott ready for the David Carney era
Lachlan Scott is relishing the challenge of emerging as a leader in the Wollongong Wolves’ new era under David Carney.
Under the stewardship of the former Socceroo, the Wolves have undergone something of a transformation ahead of the 2023 campaign, with the playing list being revitalised with the acquisition of some exciting young talents.
The former Western Sydney Wanderers front-man has been with the Wolves since 2019 and slotted 13 league goals in 2022.
He has been named captain heading into the new season at just 25 years of age, and the leadership role is one he is excited to take on.
“I’m one of the more experienced players in the group now, and we have a few players that are ready to make that step up into senior football,” he said.
“I feel more responsibility towards them and the rest of the playing group, and I want to be able to give them some of my experiences and talk them through games,”
Scott said he’d been super-impressed by what Carney has brought to the table despite being a first-year coach.
“He’s taken to the gig really well, and I think that’s helped by the wealth of football knowledge that he has after the amazing career he had,” Scott said.
“He’s bought a good group of young players together that are hungry to prove themselves and that is going to work hard for the team. All the boys he has brought in are going to put the team over themselves on and off the park, and they’re all working super hard for one another.
“We’re a pretty new team, but for a team that hasn’t played much together, the pre-season games have been really good, and there are plenty of good signs, so we’re looking forward to the season getting underway.”
The Wolves welcome APIA Leichhardt to town in Round One in what promises to be a tough test.
However, Scott said there was no better time to take one of the league’s major title contenders.
“I’m excited about the game because you know they will always bring a good team down,” he said.
“It’ll be a great test for the boys and for us. I think it’s the best time to play them.”
