Ahead of the 2024 finals series, NPL Men’s NSW legend Nathan Millgate has announced his retirement from the competition at the conclusion of the Marconi Stallions’ campaign.

Millgate has played for 14 years in New South Wales’ top male division and has been consistently excellent, combining defensive intelligence and solidity with a knack for coming up clutch in big moments.

Speaking on his decision to retire, Millgate said “I think it’s the right time at the moment to hang them up.

“It’s gotten to a point where my body probably can’t take anymore.

“I’ve been playing in this league for about 14 years now, so I think now is my time.”

Millgate will be able to look back on an impressive, formidable career in New South Wales, featuring trophies, exciting victories and a famous winner in APIA Leichhardt’s Australia Cup upset against A-League Men’s side Melbourne Victory.

It comes as little surprise that these were the moments he cherished most over his footballing years.

“I’m pretty proud of what I’ve achieved in this league,” said Millgate.

“I guess you probably remember when you win stuff, so the Premiership I won and the few Cups I’ve won – I’m pretty happy with that.

“And scoring the winner in the Australia Cup against Melbourne Victory, I’m pretty proud of that as well.”

The 33-year-old is currently in his sixth season at what will be his final NPL club – Marconi Stallions – having become a fan favourite with his determination, reading of the game and goals from defence.

“I’ve really enjoyed it to be honest,” said Millgate as he reflected on his time at Marconi.

“I joined six years ago and I’ve enjoyed every minute I’ve been there.

“It’s probably the best club I’ve ever been to.

“They look after you very well and the facilities are great there.”

Millgate has played an important role in what has been a strong season for Marconi, having finished second on the ladder, securing them an automatic spot in the Semi-finals, where they will take on Blacktown City FC.

“It’s been a good season,” he said.

“At the start of the year, our goal was to win it after 30 rounds and we fell short of that.

“I guess the next thing we focus on is trying to win the grand final, which we’re in a good position to do.”

Millgate will be crucial in Marconi’s Championship hopes, as he sets his sights towards leaving on a high and add the icing on what has been a stellar career.

“That’s the ultimate goal and would be the dream way to finish,” said Millgate on the prospect of winning the grand final in his last NPL Men’s NSW match.

“I’ve never actually won a grand final before so to win a grand final and leave in that way would be the best way possible.”

Marconi will take on Blacktown City in the Semi-finals on Sunday evening at Marconi Stadium, with the match live and free on Football NSW’s YouTube Channel with commentary courtesy of Tony Tannous.
