Sutherland Sharks snapped a three-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over Central Coast Mariners on Sunday afternoon at Rockdale Ilinden Sports Centre.

Jacob Tresoglavic scored the winning goal for the Sharks late in the first half to give his team a vital three points.

The match got off to a chance-shy first start, with both teams taking turns holding comfortable possession.

In the 17th minute, Sutherland’s Richard Shoueiki took aim from the right edge of the box, forcing Jack Warshawsky into a sharp, low save.

Warshawsky produced another impressive stop a couple of minutes later, this time palming Peter Grozos’ long-range curler away.

The Sharks carried their positive play and should have been in front half an hour in. Lachlan Macdonald picked up the ball in the right of the box and cut it back to Mason Fernandez.

Fernandez’ first shot was parried back to him by Warshawsky before the goalkeeper also saved the follow-up.

Central Coast returned fire in the 34th minute as Jai Rose lashed an effort from the edge of the box that Danijel Nizic held onto.

Sutherland’s Fernandez tested Warshawsky’s glove work again six minutes later, rolling a low shot that was turned away for a corner.

From that left-sided set piece, the visitors opened the scoring. Jerry Skotadis whipped the ball towards the far post, where Tresoglavic thundered a bouncing header into the roof of the net.

The Sharks took their lead into halftime after a strong first-half performance.

Sutherland resumed their attacking play after the break, with Shoueiki curling a bouncing effort wide of the right post from inside the box six minutes in.

The lively Fernandez almost grabbed a goal for the Sharks in the 55th minute when his volley dipped narrowly over the bar.

Central Coast started to find some momentum as the second half went on and stepped up their pursuit of an equaliser in the final 20 minutes.

The side conjured up a shot in the 81st minute as the ball popped out to Luca Pecora, whose bouncing shot was caught by Nizic.

The Mariners’ high-up field territory resulted in the team winning several set pieces, however, Sutherland defended them well.

Key to Sutherland’s defence was goal scorer Tresoglavic. The defender covered the channels well and kept Central Coast’s attackers at bay.

The Sharks held on to pick up a potentially momentum-building three points after losing their previous three matches in the competition.
