Griffiths enjoying Stallions experience

After making the move in the off-season, defender Lachlan Griffiths has enjoyed an exceptional start to life at Marconi Stallions, improving an already strong backline to help his side go unbeaten in their first eight games of the campaign.

Griffiths made the move to the reigning Champions from Rockdale Ilinden, and has already cemented his spot in their backline with some strong performances, as Marocni have conceded just five goals all season – the best defensive record in the league.

“It’s been really good,” Griffiths said on the move.

“In the off-season, there were discussions with me and Rockdale and they decided it would be best if we went a different way.

“From that, I spoke to Marconi, and they were interested in bringing me across.

“I’m really enjoying it, it’s a really professional club.

“They look after their players very well, and the kitman, the coaches, the strength and conditioning coaches, the team, it’s a great changing room to be involved in and it’s been great so far.”

Marconi has picked up five wins and three draws so far in the league this season, and have shown the ability to grind out results, with four of their victories coming by just one goal.

“It’s great for now – it’s always three points, no matter how many you score,” said Griffiths when asked about this stat.

“Having coaches that were centre-backs in Tseka (Peter Tsekenis) and Flea (Peter Papoythis), they’re stoked with the clean sheets as well.

“I feel like once we click in that one game, we’ll start to score a lot more goals.”

It’s been the defence that has shone for Marconi so far, and their new signing has been at the forefront, forming a formidable partnership with Anton Mlinaric at the heart of their defence.

“It’s a fairly similar press and defensive style to what it was at Rockdale,” said Griffiths in a modest answer when asked about his form.

“We’re trying to play as high up as possible, and Anton (Mlinaric) is very like-minded. We play very similar styles and are always covering for each other.

And then obviously having Tyren (Burnie) and Georgie (Daniel) as fullbacks – they’re good on the ball, fast and strong defensively, so that helps as well.”

Marconi will be setting their sights towards an exciting game against St George City this weekend, as they look to continue to itch closer to top spot on the ladder – something they’re just two points away from.

“It’s going to be a great game,” said Griffiths.

“St George have recruited well in the offseason and have some great players.

“At the moment, we’re playing well and getting the wins, so I’m hoping the same result will come this weekend with a couple more goals as well.”

Looking beyond that match, Marconi have clear ambitions for the season – to win everything that comes their way.

“I think we have the team and the squad depth to win everything this season,” said Griffiths.

“Whether it’s the Waratah Cup, the league, the Grand Final, the Australia Cup, I think we have the talent and numbers in the squad to do that.

“A lot of the boys know what it takes to win a Premiership over thirty games and we’re on a great path to do that.”
