Olympic continues unbeaten run against Sharks

Update 17/06/2025: The Football NSW Competitions Department has confirmed the final result will stand.

Lightning and bad weather put a premature end to play between Sydney Olympic and Sutherland Sharks at Belmore Sports Ground on Sunday afternoon.

The game was 2-1 in favour of Olympic when the game was suspended at the 73-minute mark before it was confirmed soon after the game would be postponed with the rest of the fixture to be played at a later date.

The game started well for the Sharks as they seized the lead in the seventh minute after a slip from defender Joshua Hong allowed Makis Petratos to steal the ball and slot it calmly into the bottom right.

The Blues managed to make it level in the 20th minute through similar circumstances when a slip near the halfway line from Nicholas Sullivan allowed Jack Armson to take the ball and distribute it to Cyrus Dehmie.

The striker’s shot was saved by goalkeeper Danijel Nizic but Armson, who carried on his run forward, was there to guide the rebound into the back of the net.

Armson nearly created another goal in the 27th minute by delivering a very threatening ball towards Adam Parkhouse, with his bouncing header getting deflected out by Nizic.

Sutherland nearly restored their advantage in the 31st minute after a free kick from deep by Nizic that was headed backwards by Hong, with the ball nearly falling perfectly for Mason Fernandez only for Olympic shot stopper Jack Gibson to close the space well and make the save.

Olympic came agonisingly close to scoring again in the 37th minute on two occasions, the first coming after Armson delivered a beautifully dinked ball that played through Seth Clark, though the Kiwi struck it straight into Nizic’s arms.

The second came only seconds later when the ball fell into the path of Dylan Ruiz-Diaz inside the box, with him dribbling it past Nizic before hitting it into the side netting.

The Blues eventually took the lead in the 55th minute after some great team play led to Parkhouse running into the box from the right side, passing to Ruiz-Diaz whose shot was blocked on the line only for Dehmie to then kick it in from point-blank range.

Dehmie was inches away from grabbing Olympic’s third of the game in the 71st minute after a driving run that eventually saw him have a chance at an empty goal from a tight angle on the left, though the forward dragged his effort wide of the right post.

The game was then suspended at the 73-minute mark after lightning and thunder was heard, with the teams called off the field, and after 15 minutes it was confirmed the game had been called off.
