Ahead of their match against Sutherland Sharks this weekend, we spoke to St George FC young gun Evangelos Souris on their season so far, his form and their aspirations to play finals football.

St George FC have enjoyed a steadily strong season in the NPL Men’s NSW competition, despite it being just their second season after winning promotion from the Football NSW League One Men’s competition.

In eighth place, they are in a strong position to fight for finals until the end of the season – currently seven points off the top six.

“Considering our massive injury crisis, I think we are doing well which is credit to Fab (Fabian Miceli) and all the coaching staff,” said Souris on their season so far.

“I think it’s also a major testament to the squad who have worked incredibly hard to be where we are.

“We are starting to get some players back from long-term injuries which is going to help our push in the final 10 games.

“I know the boys spirits are very high which strengthens our chemistry both on and off the pitch.”

Souris has been a crucial part of St George FC’s side over the last two years, impressing with his industry off the ball and his quality on it.

When asked about how he attains such high levels of consistency, the exciting midfielder gave a thoughtful answer.

“I think the main contributor to my consistency is the opportunities I’m provided with,” he said.

“The belief the club, staff and players have put in me allows me to play at my best with full confidence.

“I also think my work outside of game day allows me to fully prepare for every match knowing

I’ve done the training required to perform at my best.

“I think also generally just enjoying football and the brand of football we play always helps.”

Looking ahead, St George FC will face off against Souris’ old side, and a club his father (George) captained for a number of years in the early 2000’s this weekend in the form of the Sutherland Sharks, as they look to bridge the gap between themselves and the top-six.

“It’s a must-win match for us and we will approach it like every other game, with the goal of coming away with 3 points,” said Souris.

“We know it won’t be an easy task as every game in the NPL is always a tough match and very unpredictable.

“For me, returning to my old stomping ground will be exciting, especially with the new renovations.

“I’m hoping to make it a very happy return and build on last week’s result.”

Meanwhile, with finals the clear goal for St George FC, Souris also outlined his own aims, looking to break into the A-League Men’s competition off the back of his stellar performances for his NPL side.

“Fab has drilled into our head since the start of the season that our goal is to play finals football,” he said.

“I think taking each match as they come will help us achieve that objective.

“For me personally, I just want to consistently continue to play well and do what’s required for the team.

“Further to this, I want to continue to utilise the knowledge of Fab, Billy and senior players around the club to hopefully progress my career to the next level, being the A-League.”
