Stallions down Wanderers as eyes on the Premiership prize continue

Marconi Stallions snatched victory over relegation threatened Western Sydney Wanderers with a narrow 1-0 scoreline on a chilly Saturday night at Wanderers Football Park.

Mid-season recruit and former Wanderer Tass Mourdoukoutas proved the difference-maker for the away side, scoring late in the first half, which was enough for Marconi to secure the points.

The Stallions held possession in the opening five minutes as they sought to assert their dominance in the match.

Marconi almost scored in the seventh minute, when Franco Maya took on a curling strike from the right of the box, which flew wide of the far post.

Four minutes later, Dom Costanzo came even closer for the side with his clipped shot from the left edge of the area rattling the crossbar.

In the 14th minute, Marconi set off on a raid down the right as the ball came in for Marko Jesic, who steered a first-time finish wide of the near post.

Jesic threatened again four minutes after that, firing a central free-kick towards the right side of the goal and forcing Western Sydney goalkeeper Lucas Sinnott to bat the ball away.

Wanderers gained some territory midway through the half, winning a couple of set pieces in dangerous areas; however, they failed to make them count.

At the half-hour mark, Maya shifted the ball inside from the right again, this time from further out, but Sinnott caught the ball.

Marconi finally made the breakthrough in the 37th minute via a corner. Costanzo’s left-sided delivery bounced to Mourdoukoutas at the far post, who headed the ball in from close range.

The visitors looked their slender lead into the break after a fast-paced first half.

The second half got off to a slower start with limited chances until the 64th minute.

Costanzo’s volley for Marconi took on a viscous dip that required Sinnott to tip the ball over the bar acrobatically.

Western Sydney remained in the game, with their defence solid and keeping Marconi from adding to their advantage.

In the 76th minute, the Wanderers returned fire through Alaat Abdul-Rahman, who dribbled into the left of the box and shot towards the right post, with his effort going wide.

Early in stoppage time, the Stallions almost sealed the result through Matej Busek. The substitute received the ball in the right of the box and blasted it narrowly past the near post.

Marconi saw out the remaining minutes and secured another three points to keep in the hunt for top spot in the NPL Men’s NSW alongside Rockdale Ilinden and NWS Spirit FC.
