Ahead of their clash with Mt Druitt Town Rangers this weekend, we spoke to APIA Leichhardt star Fabian Monge on their Premiership battle and the matchup.

Monge re-joined APIA from A-League Men’s side Melbourne Victory in the recent mid-year transfer window, and has already made a major impact back in the side.

“It’s great,” Monge said on his return.

“I’m really happy to be back.

“Everyone’s been very welcoming.

“It’s such a tight group, and I’m really enjoying my football here.”

Two weekends ago, in just his third game back in the side, Monge scored his first goal in his second stint at APIA, coming in a crucial 4-1 victory over Rockdale Ilinden FC.

“That was a very important win for us,” he said.

“We want to be fighting for top spot, and this win gets us a step closer to reaching our goal.”

With the win, APIA knocked Rockdale off the top of the table, in what continues to be an enthralling Premiership race between four sides.

Now, taking on Mt Druitt who are fighting against relegation this weekend, they are six matches unbeaten in the league, and just three points off the top of the table.

A win for APIA is crucial, as they look to continue their late charge for the Premiership, which would be their second in three years.

“I think for us, we want to focus on one game at a time,” Monge said.

“We want to be putting up good, consistent performances together, and ultimately, that will give us the best chance to win.

“We’re taking it game by game.”
