St George FC opened their National Premier Leagues Men’s NSW campaign in emphatic fashion, recording a commanding 3-0 victory over Wollongong Wolves on Saturday night at Barton Park.

First-half goals from Jaden Casella and Christopher McStay set the platform for the hosts, before substitute Harrison Farrow added further gloss with a late strike deep into stoppage time.

The contest began at a lively tempo, with both sides searching for an early breakthrough. In the 16th minute, Casella cut inside from the right and unleashed a fierce effort that Wollongong goalkeeper Daniel Solsky handled well.

St George’s early pressure was rewarded three minutes later. Former Wolves forward Jake Trew delivered a driven ball in from the left, and Casella slid in at the near post to open the scoring.

The Saints continued to dictate proceedings and doubled their advantage just before the half-hour mark. A corner was only partially cleared, falling to McStay, who calmly poked the ball into the left side of the net against his former club.

Wollongong looked to respond through captain Lachlan Scott, but the striker headed wide from a promising central position. The visitors created further chances before the break, with Dylan Ryan’s looping header saved by Sebastian La Luz, before Flynn Madden’s free-kick bounced narrowly wide.

St George went into the interval with a deserved two-goal cushion.

The Wolves began the second half with renewed intent, Felipe D’Agostini sending a free-kick flashing just past the left post early on. Despite Wollongong enjoying extended spells of possession, the Saints remained disciplined defensively, content to absorb pressure and look to exploit space on the counter.

The hosts put the result beyond doubt in the dying moments of the match. After a patient build-up, Farrow found space on the left of the box and guided a composed finish into the bottom-right corner to seal a convincing opening-night win.

St George head coach Raphael Marie was pleased with both the performance and the result.

“I think we came out wanting to play good football and we got some good outcomes,” Marie said.

“We want to play good football and score more goals.

“In the second half we had to bunker in a bit, and credit to the boys for how they handled it.”

Wollongong midfielder Marcus Beattie felt the opening exchanges proved costly.

“Our first 20–25 minutes we were a bit off the pace and we let them score those two goals,” Beattie said.

“Against a team like this, they will punish you.

“It’s a disappointing start, but there are 29 games to go.”

St George FC will look to maintain their momentum when they travel to face rivals St George City in Round Two, while Wollongong Wolves return home to host UNSW FC.
