Harrison Farrow’s late strike deepens winless woes for Sutherland Sharks FC

St George FC piled further pressure on a winless Sutherland Sharks FC outfit and coach David Perkovic with a hard-fought 1–0 victory on Saturday night at Seymour Shaw in a fiery local derby.

Played in scorching conditions, the Saints made a bright start. Captain Jaden Casella forced an early save from Sharks goalkeeper Danijel Nizic after meeting a dangerous cross, earning his side a corner and setting the tone for the opening exchanges.

While St George controlled possession early, Sutherland began to threaten. A Nick Olsen free-kick found Tariq Maia, who delivered an inviting ball for Thijs Van Amerongen. The defender rose highest and powered a header on target, only for Saints goalkeeper Nicholas Sorras to produce a strong save.

The Saints looked the more dangerous side as the half progressed, with Justin Poon lively down the left. His low strike fizzed narrowly wide of Nizic’s far post after 15 minutes.

Former Shark Christopher McStay almost haunted his old club, dictating play in midfield and forcing a sharp save from Nizic with a well-struck free-kick. He also tried his luck from distance midway through the half.

Sutherland responded with a gilt-edged opportunity when Olsen clipped a superb ball over the top to Rylee Hollingdale, but Sorras was quick off his line to deny the attacker in a one-on-one situation.

Tempers flared in the 31st minute as players from both sides became involved in a push-and-shove. McStay was shown a yellow card for a late challenge on Hollingdale, while Van Amerongen was cautioned for entering the fray and shoving Saints players.

The Sharks continued to carve out chances before the break. Takumi Ofuka fired over the bar, while Jacob McLaughlin’s header from an Olsen corner forced another strong save from Sorras.

After an entertaining first half, Sutherland began the second period brightly. Olsen again proved influential, delivering a free-kick onto McLaughlin’s head, though the effort drifted wide. Moments later, the hosts thought they had taken the lead, but the assistant referee’s flag was raised for an infringement in the 52nd minute.

St George went close in the 63rd minute when a ball over the top released substitute Harrison Farrow. Nizic produced brave goalkeeping, racing off his line to deny the forward. Farrow was thwarted again in the 70th minute, with Nizic sprinting out and getting down low to his left after a defensive mix-up.

As the contest wore on, the Saints began to look increasingly threatening. McStay tested Nizic twice in quick succession, keeping the Sharks custodian busy.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 88th minute. Farrow timed his run to perfection, breaking the offside trap to latch onto a beautifully weighted pass over the top. With Nizic rushing out, Farrow showed composure to delicately chip the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net.

Sutherland threw everything forward in search of a late equaliser, but St George held firm to secure an important three points.

Goalscorer Harrison Farrow praised his side’s preparation and team-first mentality.

“It was a strong team performance today.

“We studied Sutherland during the week and went into the game knowing what our job was,” Farrow said.

“We weren’t going to score if we played as individuals. It was a team effort — we played as a team and got the goal we deserved.”

Sutherland goalkeeper Danijel Nizic lamented his side’s inability to convert their chances.

“It’s disappointing and we are finding it hard to get the ball in the back of the net,” Nizic said.

“We had some chances today and we didn’t take them. We need to stay positive and keep working hard.”

Sutherland travel in Round 4 to face Blacktown City FC, while St George FC host UNSW FC at Barton Park on Saturday night.
