Ten-Man Wolves Dig Deep to Defeat Sydney FC

The Wollongong Wolves got their season back on track after consecutive defeats with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Sydney FC on Sunday afternoon at Rockdale Ilinden Sports Centre.
Wet and windy conditions greeted both sides, but that did not stop an open start as the teams looked to attack early. Wolves defender Tate Russell fired an early effort from distance that forced Sydney FC goalkeeper Gus Hoefsloot into a strong save, while Sky Blues striker Mathias Macallister looked dangerous at the other end and tested Wolves goalkeeper Daniel Solsky on several occasions.
Sydney FC began to take control approaching the 20-minute mark, with midfielder Wataru Kamijo finding space outside the box before firing over the crossbar.
The Wolves struck against the run of play in the 26th minute to stun the Sky Blues. Russell won possession after a misplaced Sydney FC pass and found striker Lachlan Scott on the edge of the box. Scott then laid the ball off to winger Alex Masciovecchio, who fired a low left-footed shot into the far corner to give Wollongong the lead.
Wollongong continued to threaten as the half progressed, with Scott proving a constant nuisance for the Sydney FC defence. The Wolves finished the first half strongly, with left-back Sebastian Duarte surging forward and narrowly missing the target after another clever lay-off from Scott.
The visitors began the second half brightly, with Scott and midfielder Marcus Beattie forcing Hoefsloot into multiple saves to keep Sydney FC in the contest.
Tempers flared in the 55th minute when Sky Blues captain Mitchell Glasson pushed Wolves defender Dylan Ryan off the ball, with Ryan reacting by shoving him in return. The referee initially awarded a free kick to Wollongong, but after consulting with the assistant referee, Ryan was shown a straight red card. Glasson went to ground claiming contact to the head, although replays suggested the push did not clearly strike that area.
Despite being reduced to ten men, the Wolves doubled their advantage in the 77th minute through a penalty from midfielder Kazuya Yamamura. Centre-back Banri Kanaizumi played a clever through ball to winger Sebastian Hernandez, who drove into the box before being fouled by Sydney FC midfielder Nicolas Calder. Yamamura calmly stepped up and placed the penalty into the bottom right corner past Hoefsloot.
Sydney FC pushed forward late as they chased the game and pulled a goal back in the fifth minute of stoppage time. A cut-back from Taye Hedley found Jordan Graoroski inside the box, who tapped home from close range.
However, the Wolves held firm through the final moments to secure a valuable 2–1 win and revive their campaign.
Sydney FC captain Mitchell Glasson felt his side could have performed better and admitted the difficult conditions played a role.
“The conditions were not easy but at the end of the day it is the same for both teams,” Glasson said.
“We are disappointed about the result. I know we are levels above that performance and we need to bounce back next week.”
Wolves coach Luke Wilkshire praised his side’s resilience, particularly after going down to ten men.
“We played well and created a lot of chances and could have scored more goals,” Wilkshire said.
“We showed a lot of character when we went down to 10 men and we had to dig deep and fight hard.”
Sydney FC travel in Round 6 to face undefeated Sydney United 58 FC, while the Wolves host reigning premiers NWS Spirit FC at Macedonia Park on Sunday afternoon.
