NWS Spirit FC grind out victory in high-tempo clash with UNSW

NWS Spirit FC held firm to secure a hard-fought 2–1 victory over UNSW FC in a fast-paced and physical contest at Christie Park on Saturday night.
Both sides came into the match in good form, and it showed early, with a frantic start featuring end-to-end football.
UNSW FC began to settle into the game, with Jyden Harb looking dangerous out wide on the left, while Jack Fulton went close in the 13th minute with a shot that drifted just wide.
UNSW FC created the better chances during the early exchanges, with Fulton and Oliver Puflett causing problems for the Spirit defence.
Spirit midfielder Kosta Petratos came to life in the 29th minute. His quick feet and skill took him past defenders as he surged into the box before playing a neat pass to Shoki Yoshida, whose shot was blocked by UNSW FC defender Timothy Wohlfiel.
The home side went close to taking the lead in the 32nd minute when a long ball from Spirit defender Sam Armson found Aiden Mostofi in space down the left. Mostofi drove into the box and delivered a cross for Thomas Mason, who failed to convert into an empty net at the back post after UNSW FC goalkeeper Tristian Prendergast was left stranded.
Spirit began to take control of the match, and their dominance was rewarded in the 38th minute when they took the lead through a penalty from Petratos, who slotted the ball into the bottom right corner past Prendergast.
The penalty came after Riku Kobayashi pressed the UNSW FC defence, pounced on a stray pass, and closed down centre-back Grant Lynch. Kobayashi then played a square ball to Petratos, who was fouled in the box by Liam Wood, with the defender receiving a yellow card.
Spirit doubled their lead just minutes later when Yoshida intercepted a pass near halfway and drove into space down the left. With the UNSW FC defence caught off guard, Petratos made a clever run in behind, and Yoshida picked him out with a well-weighted through ball. Petratos chipped the onrushing Prendergast, who got a slight touch, leaving Kobayashi to slot the ball into an empty net.
NWS Spirit FC continued to dominate and finished the half with six shots — double that of UNSW FC.
Spirit made a strong start to the second half and continued to attack, with Petratos causing constant headaches for the UNSW FC defence.
UNSW FC’s best chance of the early second-half stages came from a free kick in the 61st minute, with Fulton seeing his curling effort from long range drift just over the crossbar.
Spirit continued to play free-flowing attacking football and remained a constant threat. They went close to adding a third in the 71st minute when Petratos whipped in a dangerous ball from the left, nearly finding an unmarked Kobayashi in the box.
Fulton went close again in the 78th minute, heading just wide after a well-delivered cross from the right by Wohlfiel.
As the match drew to a close, Spirit dropped deeper, allowing UNSW FC to push forward. The visitors pulled one back in the second minute of injury time when Harb found space down the left and squared the ball to substitute Sean Woods, who fired a low shot into the bottom right corner.
UNSW FC threw everything forward in the closing stages but were unable to find an equaliser, with NWS Spirit FC holding on for a hard-fought 2–1 victory.
UNSW FC return home in Round 10 to face APIA Leichhardt FC, while NWS Spirit FC will take on the Western Sydney Wanderers at Wanderers Football Park on Sunday afternoon.
