Nakano secures Derby Delight for historic Sydney United 58

Sydney United 58 made history on Easter Monday afternoon, equalling the best start to a season in the National Premier Leagues Men’s NSW era after recording their ninth consecutive victory with a 1–0 win over the Marconi Stallions in the Traditional Derby.
With history beckoning for Sydney United 58 and Marconi aiming to extend their four-game dominance over their local rivals, the contest began cautiously.
Neither side was able to generate early opportunities, with both defences holding firm in a tense opening period.
The match gradually began to live up to its pre-game billing, with the visitors creating the first clear opportunity midway through the first half.
Damian Tsekenis got the better of Sydney United 58 defender and captain Adrian Vlastelica and delivered an inviting ball over the top to Matej Busek, who struck a clean volley. However, the effort was always rising and cleared the crossbar.
Marconi continued to threaten, with Marko Jesic, Luca Pecora, and Tsekenis all managing attempts on goal, though none troubled Adam Pavlesic in the Sydney United 58 net.
Momentum shifted back in favour of the home side in the final five minutes of the half. Carlos De Oliveira connected sweetly with a Mason Wells corner, but was unable to direct his effort on target. Michael Krslovic and Faroh Koko also had opportunities, though both efforts went wide.
The second half began with the scores still level, but Sydney United 58 emerged the stronger side and were rewarded for their early pressure in the 58th minute. A Wells corner found the near-post run of Koya Nakano, whose glancing header slipped past Joel Wade to give Sydney United 58 the lead in the derby.
Sydney United 58 maintained control following the breakthrough, with Wells and Krslovic creating further chances that could have extended the lead for the league leaders.
The game eventually settled after a wave of Marconi substitutions injected fresh energy into the visitors, who pushed for an equaliser.
Substitute Franco Maya orchestrated Marconi’s best chance late in the match, finding Tsekenis in the box with three minutes remaining. However, his uncontested header failed to hit the target.
Sydney United 58 saw out the remainder of the contest to claim the inaugural Ron Corry Cup and equal the best start to a season with their ninth straight win.
Reflecting on the derby victory, Adrian Vlastelica praised his side’s performance in a tightly contested encounter and their ability to create history so early in the campaign.
“It’s always a great feeling to get a win in the derby, but for us it’s just another three points, and we go again next weekend,” Vlastelica said.
“It’s always nice to set positive records, but it’s still early in the season, and we just keep pushing forward.”
Sydney United 58 now sit five points clear at the top of the table and will look to break the record they have just matched when they host St George City next Sunday.
