Sharks Smell Blood: Sutherland Sink Rockdale for Third Straight Win

A clinical Sutherland Sharks outfit claimed a 3–1 win over Rockdale Ilinden at Seymour Shaw Park on Saturday afternoon, notching their third straight victory of the season in Round 10 action.

In this latest chapter of the Shire/St George derby, the home side surged to a two-goal first-half lead courtesy of a composed Nick Olsen finish and a Jamie Percevski header on their way to an impressive 3–1 victory.

Olsen opened the scoring with a classy strike, cutting onto his left foot before coolly slotting home from the edge of the area. The Sharks doubled their advantage before the break when Percevski rose to head home from a corner, after Takumi Ofuka had earlier rattled the crossbar.

Percevski later added his second to seal the result, applying the final touch for Sutherland’s third after Rockdale had briefly reignited hope through a well-taken Mohamed Adam strike, setting up a frantic finale.

Sutherland’s early strategy was clear—look long and exploit Rockdale’s high line during their typically fast starts—but resolute defending initially kept chances at bay. It was the visitors who struck first in attack, with a slick move in the 7th minute causing chaos in the Sharks’ defence, though Ollie Wiggin was unlucky not to capitalise.

Moments later, Wiggin again threatened, curling a left-footed effort narrowly wide, before another chance from a corner drifted just over in the 14th minute.

Rockdale were firmly on top, laying siege to the Sutherland goal. Danijel Nizic was called into action, punching clear under pressure as the visitors’ sharp, one-touch play—particularly down the flanks—caused problems. The Sharks struggled to close down space, often guilty of standing off their opponents.

As the half wore on, the physicality increased, with Lochlan Constable picking up the game’s first booking. Despite Rockdale’s dominance, it was Sutherland who struck. A fortunate bounce from a Nizic clearance in the 27th minute saw Tye McGowan break through, before the ball eventually fell to Olsen, who made no mistake with a composed finish. Against the run of play, the Sharks had their breakthrough.

Injuries and tactical changes followed for Rockdale, with Mathieu McCarthy forced off and Reo Kunimoto substituted as coach Paul Dee sought a response. However, the adjustments failed to stem the tide. Ofuka came close again—heading against the bar—before Percevski powered home from the resulting corner to double the lead. From early dominance, Rockdale suddenly found themselves two goals down at the break.

Rockdale began the second half with intent, Moudi Najjar heading straight at Nizic in what was their best move of the game so far. But chances continued to go begging. When McCarthy had an effort cleared off the line in the 54th minute, the task ahead looked increasingly daunting.

Constable tested Nizic from distance soon after, forcing a full-stretch save as Rockdale pushed forward in search of a way back.

The game grew increasingly feisty, with strong challenges flying in and tempers simmering.

Appeals for a penalty were waved away following a clash between Thijs Van Amerongen and goalkeeper Kaye, while both Olsen and Giorgio Speranza entered the referee’s book.

Substitute Richard Shoueiki had a golden chance to put the game beyond doubt but fired straight at Kaye when clean through. Rockdale continued to press, with Isaac Danzo blasting over from a free-kick as their frustration mounted.

Sutherland, now content to sit deeper, looked dangerous on the counter through Shoueiki’s pace.

Despite nearly being caught out by a long-range effort that Nizic tipped around the post, the Sharks remained in control.

The game took another twist when Mohamed Adam was played through, coolly finishing to halve the deficit with eight minutes remaining and ignite hopes of a comeback. The derby atmosphere intensified, but those hopes were short-lived.

Percevski struck again in the 86th minute, claiming the decisive touch to restore Sutherland’s two-goal cushion and effectively kill off the contest.

It was a full-blooded, hard-fought derby that could have gone either way had Rockdale been more clinical.

In the end, however, it was the resurgent Sutherland Sharks who made their chances count and secured all three points on home soil.
