Sydney FC Fire Four Past St George FC in Attacking Masterclass

Sydney FC delivered a commanding attacking performance to overwhelm St George FC 4–2 in an entertaining clash at the Ilinden Sports Centre on Sunday, controlling large periods of the match and finishing with authority despite late resistance from the visitors.
The Sky Blues exploded into life before half-time, with Macallister opening the scoring in the 36th minute before Farias and Glasson—who converted from the spot in stoppage time—extended the lead to 3–0 at the break.
The scoring continued after the restart when Hedley added a superb fourth to put the result beyond doubt, rounding off a dominant display from the home side.
St George FC responded late through Casella and Wright, but their fightback came too late to seriously threaten Sydney FC’s control of the match.
There was little early indication of a runaway scoreline, with St George FC competing well in the opening exchanges and holding their shape defensively, though they rarely troubled the Sydney FC backline in an uncharacteristically subdued attacking display.
The breakthrough came via Macallister, whose long-range free-kick took a wicked deflection off the defensive wall, looping over the goalkeeper and into the net. While slightly fortunate, the goal had been building as Sydney FC increased pressure.
That moment swung momentum firmly in the Sky Blues’ favour. Farias then produced a superb finish in the 42nd minute to double the lead, before Glasson calmly dispatched a penalty in stoppage time to send Sydney FC into the break with a commanding 3–0 advantage.
It marked the second consecutive week St George FC had found themselves three goals down at the same venue—a trend they will be eager to rectify.
Sydney FC continued their dominance after the break, with Hedley adding a stunning fourth. His curling free-kick left goalkeeper Sebastian grasping at thin air as the ball nestled into the net, further underlining the Sky Blues’ attacking quality.
St George FC did eventually find a response when substitute Javier Rodriguez intercepted a loose pass and teed up Casella, who finished calmly to give the visitors a lifeline. He almost added a second minutes later, only for a last-ditch Sydney FC block to deny him, with the home side momentarily loosening their grip.
Wright then produced a moment of brilliance to reduce the deficit further, unleashing a powerful 25-yard strike that left Gus Hoefsloot rooted to the spot. While the goalkeeper may have been unsighted, the execution was outstanding and brought St George FC back to 4–2 with ten minutes remaining.
That goal sparked a late push from St George FC, who threw everything forward in search of a dramatic comeback. They were left frustrated when a strong penalty appeal with six minutes remaining was waved away, with Casella also booked for dissent in the aftermath.
Despite the late pressure, Sydney FC held firm to secure a deserved victory.
At the halfway point of the season, St George FC will look to regroup and rediscover their early-season form, while Sydney FC continue to build momentum with a confident attacking display.
