United 58 Show Title Credentials in Thrilling Fightback

Sydney United 58 have extended their unbeaten start to the National Premier Leagues Men’s NSW season to 11 matches, producing a dramatic 3-2 come-from-behind victory over NWS Spirit FC at Christie Park on a chilly Saturday evening.
With their unbeaten run hanging by a thread late in the second half, it was Michael Krslovic who stepped up, scoring twice in the dying minutes to ensure all three points went the visitors’ way.
Both the current Premiers and league leaders entered this Round 11 clash looking to return to winning ways after draws last weekend halted their respective winning streaks.
It was an even opening to the contest, with Sydney United 58 appearing the more composed side, while Spirit enjoyed more possession in the attacking half.
The biggest moment of the first half came in the 27th minute following a rare error from United goalkeeper Adam Pavlesic. Attempting to distribute the ball, Pavlesic accidentally threw it into the ground before collecting it again without another touch, resulting in an indirect free kick just seven yards from goal. Despite nine United players crowding the goal line, Kosta Petratos fired from close range but couldn’t find a way through, as the sides went into the break level.
Sydney United 58 emerged from halftime with renewed intent and broke the deadlock just five minutes into the second half. A slick passage of one- and two-touch football involving multiple players, starting with Dylan Rose, was clinically finished by Faroh Koko from close range.
However, Spirit responded immediately and wrestled back momentum. Fourteen minutes later, they found their equaliser through Japanese forward Riku Kobayashi, who powered home a header from a perfectly delivered cross by captain Grant Cornwell.
The home side then took the lead 13 minutes later, with Kobayashi again rising highest to nod home his second goal of the evening and put Spirit in front.
With just 10 minutes remaining, Sydney United 58’s unbeaten run looked in serious danger. But the league leaders showed their class and resilience when it mattered most.
Krslovic sparked the comeback in the 81st minute, winning and converting a penalty to level the scores. Then, in the dying moments, a flowing team move involving Tomoki Wada and Bailey Rule carved open the Spirit defence, allowing Krslovic to fire home his second and complete a remarkable turnaround.
The victory ensures Sydney United 58 remain unbeaten and extends their lead at the top of the table to eight points, underlining their title credentials.
“It was good to come back from 2-1 down, a top result,” Krslovic said.
“The first half we weren’t as sharp as we like to be, but in the second half we came out sharp, ready to go, and we saw it with the early goal.”
Despite the result, NWS Spirit FC delivered a strong performance, with head coach Sergio Malfara praising his side’s progress while acknowledging there is still room for improvement.
“First and foremost, I’m super proud of the performance by the boys. You can start seeing the way we want to play,” Malfara said.
“But at the end of the day, Sydney United 58 showed why they are top of the table—they stayed in the game and found a winner late on.”
