Sydney FC and Blacktown City shared the spoils in an absorbing Round 10 clash in the NPL Men’s NSW competition, with the hosts mounting a late comeback to overturn a two-goal deficit and deny the visitors a much-needed victory.

Blacktown City entered the match still searching for consistency, with defensive lapses continuing to undermine their campaign. That trend persisted here, as a strong position slipped from their grasp, leaving them still chasing just their second win since Round 1.

Sydney FC, meanwhile, have quietly gone about their business this season. Sitting mid-table and within touching distance of the top half, they once again showed resilience and character, fighting back late to secure a valuable point on home soil.

The opening stages offered limited clear-cut opportunities. In the 12th minute, Joe Lacey came closest for Sydney FC, dragging a low effort narrowly wide in what proved to be little more than a half-chance. The contest ebbed and flowed without real incision until the visitors struck in the 24th minute.

A well-weighted delivery from Mitchell Mallia on the left found Travis Major centrally, and the experienced forward produced a composed first-time volley to give Blacktown City the lead.

The remainder of the first half was a tightly contested affair, shaped by tactical discipline and mutual respect. Chances remained scarce, and Blacktown City took their slender advantage into the break.

The visitors began the second half with intent and nearly extended their lead in the 55th minute. Mallia, dangerous throughout, turned sharply and fired goalward, forcing Sydney FC goalkeeper Gus Hoefsloot into a smart diving save.

Just five minutes later, Blacktown City did double their advantage. A costly turnover from the young Sydney FC defence allowed Major to capitalise, and he showed his quality with a delicate chip over the advancing Hoefsloot to make it 2–0.

At that stage, the visitors appeared in full control and on course for a vital three points. They had a golden opportunity to put the result beyond doubt in the 78th minute when a long ball released Caleb Jackson-Brown, who squared for Riley Nolan. However, from close range, Nolan was denied by a brave and crucial intervention from Hoefsloot, who saved at his feet to keep his side in the contest.

That moment proved pivotal. Just three minutes later, Sydney FC found a way back into the match. Mitchell Glasson applied a composed finish after latching onto a well-delivered ball from the right, breathing new life into a contest that had been drifting towards a Blacktown victory.

With momentum now firmly on their side, Sydney FC pushed forward in search of an equaliser—and found it in spectacular fashion in the 88th minute. Substitute Marin France stepped up to deliver a superb free-kick, curling his effort over the wall and into the top corner to level the scores and cap a remarkable turnaround.

Post-match, Blacktown City coach Mark Crittenden expressed his frustration at seeing his side surrender a commanding position.

“When things are not going your way, they all tend not to go your way,” he said. “We battled really hard against a decent side and got ourselves two goals up, but once we conceded late, it was always going to be difficult.

“For their second goal, I think we were done by something that was not in our hands—and that’s been the story of our season so far.”

Sydney FC coach Jim Van Weeren, however, took positives from his side’s resilience.

“We were good in possession without being effective,” he said. “It was probably fair to go into the break a goal down, but it was great to see our young side show mental resilience to fight back from two goals down—that’s a real positive for us.

“For both goals we conceded there were errors, and that’s part of the learning process. Hopefully those mistakes reduce over time, because ideally it’s a game we could have gone on to win.”

In the end, both sides were left to reflect on what might have been—Blacktown City ruing missed chances and defensive lapses, while Sydney FC took encouragement from a spirited late comeback that salvaged a point.
