Sydney FC delivered a commanding 5–0 victory over St George City FA at Penshurst Park on Saturday night, taking full control of the contest after an early red card swung the momentum firmly in their favour.

The Sky Blues produced a clinical, free-flowing attacking display from start to finish, never looking threatened as they moved to within touching distance of the top six.

Both sides entered the match with contrasting form lines — St George City desperate to respond after a tough run, while Sydney FC aimed to find consistency in an inconsistent campaign — but it was the visitors who exploded out of the blocks.

Sydney FC controlled possession early, dominating the midfield battle and pinning St George City deep inside their own half. Joe Lacey and Nickolas Alfaro both looked lively in the opening exchanges, each testing goalkeeper Franklin Jan with efforts that narrowly missed the target.

The game took a decisive turn in the 21st minute when St George City defender Benjamin Berry was shown a straight red card for denying Taye Hedley a clear goalscoring opportunity as he raced through on goal. Hedley dusted himself off and struck the resulting free-kick into the wall, but the tone of the match had already shifted dramatically.

With the numerical advantage, Sydney FC surged forward and were rewarded in the 27th minute. A sharp midfield interception saw Lachlan Middleton feed Marin France, who combined neatly with Hedley before receiving the return pass. France then drilled a low strike across goal and into the far corner, giving Jan no chance.

The Sky Blues continued to pile on the pressure, with Mitchell Glasson forcing a smart save from Jan in the 33rd minute, the St George City keeper diving low to his right to deny a powerful effort.

Sydney FC doubled their advantage in the 36th minute through a moment of brilliance from Lacey, who unleashed a thunderous strike into the bottom-left corner from outside the box after a short corner routine.

Despite the pressure, St George City showed signs of life late in the half, with Yohn Pederson going agonisingly close in the 42nd minute, his powerful header crashing off the crossbar after a pinpoint delivery from Matthew Jackson.

Sydney FC went into the break firmly in control, registering nine shots — four on target — compared to just one from the home side.

The Sky Blues carried their momentum into the second half and extended their lead in the 49th minute. Glasson was perfectly positioned to tap home from close range after a dangerous cross from France on the right, capitalising on St George City’s failure to clear a corner.

Sydney FC continued to play fast, fluid, attacking football, with sharp transitions and relentless pressure. Their dominance was rewarded again in the 59th minute when Lacey drove powerfully through midfield on a surging run before finding France inside the box, who fired home from close range via the post for his second of the night.

St George City attempted to respond by sitting deeper and looking to counter, but Sydney FC remained firmly in control, creating chance after chance as they pushed for a fifth. The home side also appeared to fade physically following their midweek Hahn Australia Cup win over Camden Tigers FC.

The fifth and final goal arrived in the 86th minute, and it was a fitting finish to a dominant performance. Hedley danced through the St George City defence from the left, cut inside, and unleashed a superb strike from outside the box that nestled into the bottom-right corner.

In the end, Sydney FC were far too strong, producing a five-star performance and a comprehensive 5–0 win. The result lifts them to within two points of the top six, while St George City remain second last on the ladder after a difficult evening.
