Wanderers Run Riot as St George FC Suffer Heavy Defeat

Western Sydney Wanderers produced a clinical and composed performance to defeat St George FC 4-0 at Barton Park in Round 13 of the NPL Men’s NSW competition, with the visitors taking full control early and never looking back in a dominant display.
Both sides entered the contest in desperate need of a lift after extended winless runs, but it was the Wanderers who delivered in emphatic fashion, snapping a five-game winless streak with a statement victory. St George FC, meanwhile, have now suffered seven straight defeats as they continue to search for answers amid a growing injury toll.
The Wanderers wasted no time asserting themselves, with visiting supporters celebrating inside three minutes when Jai Rose latched onto a well-weighted pass and fired confidently into the back of the net to open the scoring.
They nearly doubled their advantage shortly after, with Julian Cop testing newly promoted St George goalkeeper Marcus Petrovski from the edge of the box, only for the shot-stopper to produce a strong save.
However, the pressure eventually told. In the 10th minute, Atiya Waraga burst through a hesitant St George defence before calmly slotting home to make it 2-0 and put the Wanderers firmly in control.
St George FC’s first real opportunity came in the 15th minute when a dangerous cross from the right found Katsuyoshi Kimishima at the back post, but Wanderers goalkeeper Tristan Vidackovic was alert to the danger and produced a smart save.
The visitors then produced a moment of pure brilliance in the 24th minute. Oscar Morrison, spotting Petrovski off his line from inside his own half, unleashed an audacious strike reminiscent of the great long-range finishes of the Premier League era. The ball sailed perfectly into the net, leaving teammates stunned and the goalkeeper stranded. A genuine contender for goal of the season.
The Wanderers continued to control proceedings, with Waraga forcing another save from Petrovski early in the second half. St George responded with double substitutions in an attempt to shift momentum, but the Wanderers’ grip on the match remained firm.
A rare opening for the hosts came in the 73rd minute when Justin Poon turned and fired inside the box, only to be denied by Vidackovic once again.
Any hopes of a late St George fightback were extinguished in the 81st minute when the Wanderers were awarded a penalty after Awan Lual was brought down by Mark Rodic, who was booked for the challenge. Lual stepped up and calmly dispatched the spot-kick, sending Petrovski the wrong way to extend the lead to 4-0.
St George almost grabbed a consolation in the 89th minute when Nicholas Stavropoulos met a well-delivered cross, but Vidackovic produced another composed save to preserve the clean sheet.
In truth, it was a dominant, professional performance from the Wanderers, who controlled the match from early on and saw out the contest comfortably as the final whistle brought relief for the home side.
Wanderers coach Panny Nikas praised his side’s maturity and execution after securing a much-needed three points.
“It was good to get the three points and I am happy for the boys,” he said. “In our last couple of games we have let leads slip, but I think our football is getting better.
“We worked on capitalising on our key moments during the game and I am especially pleased with the boys’ maturity to do this.
“I am happy with our team’s collective mentality and our improvement both on and off the ball. We have Wollongong at home next week, which will be a good challenge and I’m sure the boys will rise to it.”
St George FC coach Raphael Marie remained composed despite another difficult result, pointing to injuries and squad development.
“We had that good run at the start of the season but now we are suffering,” he told Football NSW. “Injuries are impacting us, but we still have a good squad that can perform better than we did tonight.
“We are a young group and it’s up to us as coaches to lift them. The Wanderers are a really good team with future A-League players — direct and quick — but we still showed good passages of play even after conceding early.”
