In a blockbuster top-of-the-table showdown at Lambert Park, APIA Leichhardt have produced a massive statement performance, downing Sydney United 58 2-1 to leap into first place on the ladder.

For Sydney United 58, it represents just their second defeat of the season in what had all the makings of a potential Grand Final preview between two of the competition’s leading sides.

The match exploded into life early, with two goals inside the opening 15 minutes as both teams showcased their attacking quality.

APIA struck first through Jack Stewart, who finished off a flowing team move that began deep in their own half before Oscar Gonzalez picked him out perfectly inside the box for a composed finish.

Sydney United 58 responded almost immediately. From a corner situation, Koya Nakano reacted quickest to a loose ball, unleashing a powerful strike that beat Oliver Kalac and levelled the scores at 1-1.

The visitors almost turned the game on its head in the 17th minute when Michael Krslovic twisted the APIA defence inside out, but his final pass just evaded Gabriel Tilo in a big missed opportunity.

That proved costly, with APIA regaining the lead in the 25th minute. Gonzalez stayed alert after an initial attacking phase, reacting quickest to a rebound and slotting home from close range to restore the advantage.

APIA goalkeeper Oliver Kalac then produced a key spell of saves in quick succession, first getting down low to deny Carlos De Oliveira before reacting sharply again to push away a long-range effort from Mason Wells, keeping his side in front.

As half-time approached, tensions rose with both sides requiring separation in a fiery derby atmosphere.

Sydney United 58 came out strongly after the break, with Seiya Kambayashi denied a certain goal in the 50th minute by a last-ditch intervention from Michael Glassock.

Wells continued to be heavily involved for the visitors, forcing Kalac into action again in the 57th minute, before narrowly missing a connection from Farah Koko’s dangerous delivery just minutes later.

Sydney United 58 pushed relentlessly for an equaliser, with Wells curling a shot around the APIA wall in the 71st minute, only to be denied once again by a diving Kalac save.

Krslovic and Wells both had further opportunities as the match entered its final stages, but APIA’s defensive structure held firm under sustained pressure.

Despite late pressure, APIA Leichhardt held on to secure a crucial derby victory and move to the top of the table.

APIA coach Themva Muata-Marlow was delighted with the important victory against a tough outfit.

“We always know it’s a massive game against Sydney United 58.

“They’re one of the best teams in the league and it’s always a tough battle playing them. However we were on a really good run headed into the game and we were elated with all three points.

“Sydney United 58 are good technically, but they’ll match you physically as well. They’re very aggressive and know how to keep the ball.

“But we weren’t afraid to get stuck in and it paid dividends for us.”
