In a tense, physical and hard-fought battle at a cold and smoky Penshurst Park, St George City FA have snapped their seven-game winless run with a determined 1-0 victory over Sutherland Sharks.

The opening half saw St George City FA set up with a disciplined five-man defensive structure, prioritising shape and containment as they looked to absorb early pressure from the visitors.

Nick Olsen was lively early for the Sharks, cutting into the box and seeing a strong appeal for handball waved away before play quickly moved on.

St George City FA created the first real opening in the 17th minute when Hiroto Dohmoto burst through on goal, but his effort was comfortably gathered by Sharks goalkeeper Danijel Nizic.

Dohmoto remained involved shortly after, attempting to link with Brodie Clarkson, but the final pass was cut out by the Sharks defence.

The visitors came close in the 28th minute when Jamie Percevski rose well from a corner, only to see his header drift just over the crossbar in a moment that summed up their frustration in front of goal.

Sutherland continued to press through Richard Shoueiki, Olsen and Jordan Perez, but time and again were met by a well-organised St George City FA back line.

The best chance of the half fell to Lachlan MacDonald in stoppage time, whose powerful header forced a brilliant reaction save from St George City FA goalkeeper Jack Kenny, ensuring the game remained level at the break.

St George City FA emerged from halftime with far more intent in attack, beginning to push Sutherland deeper into their own half with sustained pressure.

A key moment came in the 57th minute when Ahmad Taleb went down inside the area appealing for a penalty, but the referee remained unmoved. Taleb was eventually forced off injured moments later, adding further disruption to the home side’s rhythm.

Shoueiki continued to be Sutherland’s main attacking outlet, again working his way past Mason Tatafu before seeing his dangerous cross go unconverted.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 69th minute, and it was a reward for St George City FA’s persistence. A well-worked move culminated in Matthew Jackson delivering a pinpoint cross into the box, where Dohmoto rose highest to power a header past Nizic and into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Sutherland threw everything forward late, including strong penalty appeals in the dying moments, but St George City FA held firm under pressure to secure a crucial three points and end their winless run in style.
