Sydney United 58 FC responded in emphatic fashion to last week’s setback, producing a dominant display to secure a 3-1 win over a struggling St George FC side on Saturday night at Barton Park.

Despite a spirited second-half response from the hosts, United 58’s early control and clinical finishing proved decisive in a commanding performance.

St George FC entered the match desperate for a win after eight straight losses and a long injury list, while Sydney United 58 suffered only their second defeat of the season last weekend against APIA and were keen to bounce back with a win.

Sydney United 58 made a fast start and showed their intent right from kick off and were dominating the early play with Farah Koko firing over in the first five minutes.

United 58 took the lead in the 10th minute after Mason Wells unleashed a brilliant left foot strike from just inside the 18-yard box that curled into the top left hand corner, leaving St George FC goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic with no chance.

The away side continued to dominate with chances aplenty and doubled their lead soon after in the 16th minute. A corner from Koko was delivered to the back post with United 58 defender Adrian Vlastelica pulling off a spectacular bicycle kick that was deflected off teammate Liam McGing and scrambled over the goal line.

United 58 were controlling the game and continued to win the midfield battle, with the best chance for St George coming from a Jaden Casella free kick in the 27th minute that forced a good punch from United 58 goalkeeper Adam Pavlesic.

St George slowly began to grow into the match with striker Jake Trew a constant threat and he produced a powerful strike on the edge of the 18-yard box in the 42nd minute that forced a good save from Pavlesic who got a fingertip on the shot resulting in a corner.

The first half came to a close with United 58 registering six shots with three on target, while St George had just the one shot on target.

St George made a fast start to the second half and scored in the 47th minute after a cross from Casella was headed clear by the United 58 defence, with the ball falling to Kaidyn Wright who unleashed a low, powerful strike that beat Pavlesic at the near post.

However, it didn’t take long for United 58 to restore their two-goal lead with midfielder Carlos De Oliveira scoring only a couple of minutes later. A free-kick was played short to De Oliveira who was left unmarked on the edge the 18-yard box and he beautifully slotted home a right foot shot that missed everyone in the box and beat Janjetovic.

United 58 were continuing to apply the pressure to St George and thought they had a penalty after Koko went on a driving run and went down in the box, however the referee waved play on.

United 58 went down to 10-men in the 66th minute when defender Bailey Rule was shown a straight red card after he appeared to kick out at Casella after both players challenged for a header.

The sending off seemed to inspire St George as they created a few decent chances and kept Pavlesic busy in the United 58 goal.

St George kept throwing bodies forward as they desperately chased down the two-goal deficit with Kaidyn Wright going close with a shot that went just wide in injury time.

In the end, United 58 maintained their composure and came away with a strong 3-1 win as they returned to winning ways, while the misery continues for St George FC.

Next up for St George FC is a Round 16 away fixture against the Wollongong Wolves, while Sydney United 58 FC hit the road to play UNSW FC on Saturday afternoon.
