The Wollongong Wolves continued their red-hot form with a commanding 2-0 win over St George FC on Sunday afternoon at Macedonia Park, extending their unbeaten run to 12 matches and continuing the misery for St George who suffered their tenth straight defeat.

Strikes from Alex Masciovecchio and Sebastian Hernandez secured the victory for the Wolves as St George’s difficult season continued.

The Wollongong Wolves entered the match full of confidence on the back of an incredible 11-match unbeaten run, having not lost since February, while St George FC were desperate for a win after nine straight losses and a long injury list.

The match started at a lively, fast pace with both sides playing some free-flowing, attacking football. Wolves midfielder Lucas Trajcevski had the best chance of the early stages when his shot forced a good save from St George FC goalkeeper Nicholas Sorras in the 14th minute.

The Wolves started to control the game and were winning the midfield battle, with St George FC sitting deep and trying to hit the Wolves on the counter.

Wollongong’s dominance was rewarded in the 30th minute when they took the lead thanks to a brilliant strike from outside the 18-yard box from winger Alex Masciovecchio after a nice lay off from captain Lachlan Scott. The shot curled into the bottom left corner of the St George FC goal, leaving Sorras with no chance.

The impressive strike was celebrated in spectacular style with Masciovecchio performing his trademark backflips, much to the delight of the home crowd.

Captain Scott was causing all sorts of trouble for the St George FC defence and he went close to doubling the Wolves lead in the 36th minute after some neat and intricate play inside the visitors 18-yard box.

The Wolves were keeping Sorras busy in goals with Trajcevski unleashing a shot from distance in the 40th minute that required a save from the goalkeeper.

St George FC striker and former Wolves player Jake Trew was proving to be a nuisance for the Wolves defence, with the away side looking to get the ball to the striker who was making dangerous runs.

The first half came to a close with the Wolves registering nine shots with three on target, while St George had just the two shots with both failing to hit the target.

St George FC started the second half with intent after a double substitution at half-time, forcing Wolves goalkeeper Daniel Solsky into a couple of early saves.

The home side hit back in the 57th minute and doubled their lead after some swift, counter attacking football. Wolves winger Sebastian Hernandez calmly slotted the ball past Sorras in a one-on-one situation after a good switch of play from Trajcevski.

St George FC began to win the possession battle as they chased the game, with Katsuyoshu Kimishima looking lively after his injection into the game at half-time.

The Wolves went close to adding a third goal in the 83rd minute after young guns Noah Mathie and Trajcevski combined in midfield, with a last ditch tackle from St George FC defender Jayden Seeto preventing Trajcevski from getting his shot away.

St George FC were throwing everything at the Wolves as they tried to get back into the game with substitute Tanakorn Rugsat unleashing a shot from distance in injury time that rattled the crossbar.

Despite sustained St George pressure in the closing stages, the Wolves held firm to secure a 2-0 win. The victory sees Wollongong continue their strong form as they cemented their place in the top four and extended their unbeaten run to 12 games, while for St George FC, the misery continued as they suffered their tenth straight loss amid a horror run of form with new coach Brian Brown yet to taste win since taking over.

Next up for the Wolves is an away game against UNSW FC, while St George FC face-off in the derby against St George City FA at Barton Park on Saturday night.
