St George City FA have taken the spoils in the St George Derby, defeating St George FC 1-0 at Barton Park on a chilly Saturday night.

St George City FA started brightly, applying early pressure and forcing St George FC deep into their own half for long stretches of the opening stages.

City goalkeeper Jack Kenny even tried to spark an attacking moment with a huge clearance into the opposition box, but St George FC keeper Nicholas Sorras was alert to gather comfortably.

The visitors continued to turn the screw, with a turnover deep in St George FC territory almost leading to a breakthrough, only for Jesse Photi to be denied on the goal line.

Brayden Clarkson then tried his luck from distance, although his effort sailed well over the crossbar.

St George FC gradually worked their way into the contest and created their first real opening in the 10th minute, with Nicholas Kalogerou slipping a smart through ball to Justin Poon, but the attack was well defended.

City’s Hiroto Dohmoto then produced a superb solo run before sliding in a clever pass to set up another chance, though Sorras was once again equal to it.

Late in the half, Jake Trew combined neatly with Jaden Casella via a backheel inside the box, but the resulting shot drifted wide as St George FC failed to capitalise.

St George City FA resumed the second half in the same manner as the first, immediately on the front foot and pressing high.

Their pressure was rewarded almost instantly when Mason Tatafu struck from distance, with an awkward bounce deceiving goalkeeper Nicholas Sorras as the ball nestled into the back of the net to open the scoring.

From there, the tempo lifted significantly, with St George FC pushing desperately for an equaliser as they searched to end a 10-game winless run.

They almost responded quickly, with Casella delivering a cross to Trew, but the delivery was just too high to convert.

City substitute Paolo Mitry added further attacking spark, coming close in the 66th minute after a well-worked move, though his effort cleared the bar.

St George City FA’s Jesse Photi was shown a yellow card for a late challenge on Jayden Seeto as the match grew increasingly tense.

Rocco Smith added energy off the bench in the 84th minute, pressing high and forcing mistakes in the final third as City looked to close the game out.

Despite late pressure, St George FC could not find a way through, as they fell to an 11th consecutive defeat and remain perilously close to the relegation zone.
