Ortiz delivers stoppage-time winner as APIA edge Spirit 2-1

An icy Saturday evening at Christie Park saw NWS Spirit FC fall to a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat against a clinical APIA Leichhardt FC in an absorbing Round 17 encounter.
Despite the home side producing large periods of dominant football and looking the more dangerous outfit for significant stretches, it was APIA who demonstrated the ruthless efficiency of true title contenders, snatching all three points with the final kick of the match to keep their premiership charge firmly on track.
The match exploded into life within the opening 30 seconds as Spirit immediately signaled their attacking intent. High-pressing work from Kosta Petratos allowed him to hold up play effectively before feeding Aiden Mostofi, who struck a first-time effort that agonisingly brushed the outside of the post.
As the contest settled, both sides looked to establish tactical dominance. APIA attempted to overload the right flank through overlapping wing-back Cameron Fong and winger Rory Jordan, while Spirit remained incredibly lively on the counter, utilizing the penetrating runs of Petratos to disrupt the visitors’ backline.
It was Spirit who continued to carve out the clearer openings as the first half progressed. A fluid piece of combination play outside the area presented Corey Kavanagh with a clear sight of goal, though his powerful drive flashed just wide of the target.
Minutes later, the hosts threatened again down the left wing when another technical burst from Mostofi allowed him to deliver a dangerous ball into the box. A hesitant APIA clearance fell perfectly for Grant Cornwell, but his well-struck volley mirrored Kavanagh’s earlier effort by rocketing past the post.
Rallying behind a vocal home crowd, Spirit looked the clear favourites to break the deadlock before the interval. Simon Nicholas tried his luck from well over 30 yards with a spectacular half-volley that forced Oliver Kalac into an alert save, before consecutive corners in the 43rd minute pinned the visitors deep into their own territory.
Only a combination of Kalac’s acrobatic reflexes and the woodwork ensured APIA crawled into the sheds with the 0-0 scoreline intact.
The second half resumed with both teams testing the waters, but the stalemate was emphatically broken in the 58th minute. Another intricate sequence of interplay from the hosts released Kaan Nizam outside the penalty area. With plenty of work still to do, the forward drove through a crowded defensive block and unleashed a perfectly placed strike into the side netting to give Spirit a deserved 1-0 lead.
The deficit forced the visiting bench into immediate tactical adjustments, shifting toward a much more aggressive, offensive posture. The gamble paid immediate dividends in the 69th minute. Jack Stewart and Michael Kouta combined brilliantly down the left flank, with a neat one-two releasing Kouta to the byline. His precisely weighted pullback found Max Court at the penalty spot, who finished confidently into the bottom corner to restore parity.
While the equalizer shifted the momentum toward the visitors and allowed them to establish camp in Spirit’s defensive half, the frantic pace slowly began to simmer as full-time approached. Just as both sides looked resigned to sharing the spoils in the freezing conditions, substitute Presley Ortiz stepped up in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
A low, crawling cross from Cameron Fong managed to filter through a crowded penalty box to find Ortiz, whose scuffed but decisive strike found its way into the bottom corner.
The APIA bench spun into wild celebrations as the final whistle sounded shortly after. While the overall performance was far from their most polished display of the season, APIA’s ability to withstand immense pressure and find a way to win when not at their fluent best is the ultimate hallmark of champions.
