Glasson strikes as Sky Blues hold firm in Spirit thriller

Sydney FC defeated NWS Spirit 1-0 in a tense, high-quality NPL Men’s NSW clash at Ilinden Sports Centre on Friday night, where the Sky Blues produced a resilient response to last week’s heavy defeat, holding off a relentless Spirit side in a match full of intensity, drama, and fine margins.

The opening exchanges were physical and combative, with several heavy challenges requiring stern intervention from referee Jackson Tippett.

Spirit felt they had a strong claim for a penalty in the 10th minute, but appeals were waved away as the home side stood firm in the early pressure.

Sydney FC struck first with their opening meaningful attack. Sky Blues captain Mitchell Glasson timed his run brilliantly to meet a cross, directing a purposeful header down into the turf after a poor defensive lapse from Brodie Smith and up over Christopher Marques and into the net. The goal settled nerves around the ground and gave the Sky Blues a platform to grow into the contest. It was Glasson’s eighth goal of the 2026 NPL Men’s NSW campaign.

Buoyed by the breakthrough, they controlled possession for much of the next 25 minutes, showcasing their neat diamond passing structure and patient build-up play from the back, although without adding a second goal.

Spirit remained disciplined in shape but were forced to build from deeper positions, limiting their ability to break lines.

As a result, they resorted to longer passes in search of an equaliser, but struggled to generate clear chances before the interval, with Sydney FC taking a slender 1-0 lead into the break.

The visitors made a change at half-time, with Ben Duroux replacing Stavros Tserpes in a positional switch.

Spirit came out brighter, and Riku Kobayashi was denied at close range by Gus Hoefsloot, with Corey Kavanagh following in and colliding with the post as the rebound was cleared for a corner. Kavanagh was later forced off through injury.

Spirit continued to push and had another penalty appeal, this time for handball, turned away as frustration began to build.

Kosta Petratos was then booked following a flashpoint that left Glasson needing to replace his boot.

Despite the interruption, Glasson immediately made his presence felt again, breaking forward and delivering a clever chipped pass for Taye Hedley, whose curling effort drifted just wide.

As in the first half, Sydney FC absorbed pressure before working their way back into the contest.

Marin France came close to doubling the lead in the 66th minute, weaving into the box before seeing his shot skim narrowly past the post after exploiting space left behind by Spirit’s attacking intent.

Spirit continued to threaten, with Grant Cornwell denied by a well-positioned Hoefsloot from another headed chance, but they were always wary of Sydney FC’s pace on the counter.

The closing stages were frantic. After a scramble inside the box and several blocked efforts, Hoefsloot eventually claimed the ball with five minutes remaining having barely been tested in the opening half but producing crucial interventions when it mattered most.

In truth, it was a combination of positioning, resilience and a touch of fortune that kept the Sky Blues in front.

In the end, that early Glasson strike proved decisive, sealing the points for Sydney FC after a testing week, while Spirit were left to reflect on another narrow and frustrating defeat.
