United 58 too strong for Wanderers as title charge continues
Sydney United 58 returned to the winners circle with a 2-0 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers at Wanderers Football Park on Saturday afternoon.
A penalty from Kyle Cimenti and a second-half strike from Carlos De Oliveira secured all three points for the visitors, while the Wanderers were unable to find a way past a resolute Sydney United 58 defence.
De Oliveira threatened early for the visitors in the 12th minute, directing an effort on target, but Lachlan Allen was equal to the task and made the save.
Sydney United 58 were awarded a penalty in the 18th minute after Bradley Marszal brought down Farah Koko during a dangerous attacking run. Cimenti stepped up and calmly slotted his effort into the bottom corner to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Koko tried his luck again in the 37th minute with a powerful strike, but his effort flew over the bar.
The Wanderers responded a minute later from a corner, with Jesse Cameron connecting with the delivery, only to send his attempt over the woodwork.
Western Sydney created an opportunity early in the second stanza, with Adam Pavlesic producing two crucial saves in the 49th minute to keep the hosts at bay.
Sydney United doubled their lead in the 66th minute through De Oliveira.
Tomislav Ozanic played a ball wide to Leroy Jennings, who found Bailey Rule. Rule then tapped it across to De Oliveira, who confidently finished from close range.
Bradley Marszal sent a ball in to Lachlan Sattout in the 70th minute, giving the hosts a promising look, but Sattout sent his shot wide.
The young Western Sydney outfit continued to push, with Sattout sending a tame shot towards goal in the 88th minute, but Pavlesic was able to collect comfortably.
Sydney United 58 nearly added a third in the closing stages when substitute Krslovic fired on target in the 90th minute, but Allen produced a strong save to tip the effort over the crossbar.
Mason Wells also came close in the 94th minute, curling an effort towards goal, but was unable to find the target as Sydney United 58 closed out a deserved 2-0 victory.
