Wanderers and St George City share spoils in 1-1 draw

Western Sydney Wanderers FC and St George City played out a 1-1 draw at Wanderers Football Park on Saturday afternoon, in a tightly contested encounter where both sides had periods of control but ultimately could not be separated.
The hosts were first to threaten, with Julian Cop curling a first-time effort toward goal, only to be denied by St George City FA goalkeeper Jack Kenny.
St George City responded soon after, as Michael Wahby delivered a precise ball into the path of Yohn Pederson, who struck a driven effort straight at the Wanderers defence.
Western Sydney continued to apply pressure, with Bradley Marszal finding space on the edge of the box in the 28th minute, only to curl his effort narrowly wide.
Moments later, a well-weighted delivery from the hosts found Harper Ryles, whose header was comfortably gathered by Kenny.
St George City then looked to counter through Paulo Mitry, who won possession and unleashed a powerful strike, but Wanderers keeper Lucas Sinnott was equal to it in the 32nd minute.
The Wanderers finished the half strongly, with Alaat Abdul-Rahman creating two late chances, though both efforts were kept out by Kenny.
Wahby continued to be dangerous from wide areas, whipping in another inviting cross that Hiroto Dohmoto rose to meet, but his header drifted just wide.
The second half began in a cagey fashion, with both teams struggling to establish rhythm or sustained control.
St George City struck first in the 63rd minute. Substitute Matthew Jackson combined with Dohmoto to release Pederson, who turned sharply and finished clinically to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Wanderers responded with urgency, as Ricky Fransen tested from distance in an attempt to break down the visiting defence.
The equaliser arrived in the 80th minute, with the Wanderers working the ball well before it fell to left-back Jesse Cameron, who rifled home a powerful strike to make it 1-1.
Western Sydney pushed for a winner late, with Cop going close again as his effort fizzed just wide of the target.
Despite late pressure from both sides, neither team could find a decisive goal, with the match finishing level and both teams taking a point from a hard-fought contest.
Post-match, Western Sydney Wanderers FC coach Luca Andreacchio praised his side’s application.
“I thought it was a good performance across the whole game. I know they are a tough opponent and tough to break down.
“I am happy with the application from the side and we’re looking to get better every day, which is our objective,” Andreacchio said.
St George City coach Mirko Jurilj reflected on his side’s missed opportunity.
“It is the same old, same old for us.
“I thought the last 15 of the first half we were better but we have a few players who aren’t match-fit, so we’re struggling.
“Unfortunately, we just aren’t good enough especially after going ahead, we go into a negative mindset,” Jurilj said.
