Sydney United 58 edge 10-man SD Raiders to stay in Premiership hunt

A 10-man SD Raiders side were unable to deter Sydney United 58, who continued their Premiership push with a 1-0 win at Sydney United Sports Centre on Sunday afternoon.
A straight red card to Ethan Beaven early in the first half changed the trajectory of the match, before substitute Leroy Jennings scored the game’s only goal early in the second half.
It was a quick turnaround for both sides, who entered the clash following mid-week Waratah Cup action, with Sydney United 58 benefitting from the frantic start to the Round 20 encounter.
Before a shot was even registered, the Raiders were reduced to 10 men inside the opening five minutes, with Beaven, who had only just returned to the starting eleven, dismissed for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity.
Carlos De Oliveira played a curling ball into the path of Michael Krslovic, who outpaced the Raiders back line and used his pace and strength to get in front of Beaven, who brought him down. Referee Eric Saba had no hesitation in producing an early red card.
The numerical advantage saw Sydney United 58 dominate possession and territory, but a disciplined and organised Raiders side, led by captain James Letta, held firm and frustrated the home side for long periods.
United’s best chance of the first half came in the final minutes, with Krslovic again breaking through the defensive line. With two attackers against two defenders, he elected to go alone instead of squaring to De Oliveira, firing over the bar to let the opportunity slip.
Both sides made changes at half-time in search of a breakthrough, and Sydney United 58 found it almost immediately after the restart. A cross from Koya Nakano found Krslovic, who laid the ball off for Jennings, and the substitute finished first time past Miguel Figueira at his near post to make it 1-0.
United had a golden chance to double their lead five minutes later. Krslovic pressed high, dispossessing Figueira after a Raiders build-up from the back, but his attempt from distance went over the crossbar with the goal unguarded.
With the Raiders chasing the game despite being a man down, space opened up in the second half, and both sides created chances without adding to the scoreline.
Ultimately, Sydney United 58 held on for a vital three points as they continue their push toward the final third of the season.
After the match, Fijian international Leroy Jennings reflected on the win and his decisive goal.
“It was a big week for us. Three games in seven days, we regrouped after Wednesday, 120 minutes there, so we needed to rotate the team around. Coming into this game, Miro (Vlastelica) said the boys off the bench would need to make an impact. I was lucky enough to get on the end of this one and score my first goal.
“We needed to calm ourselves down; we didn’t need to score straight away. I think sometimes when you get a red card, you feel like you need to score immediately. The half-time talk was just to stay calm, play our football and let the goal come.”
Looking ahead to the final stretch of the season and the tight three-club race for the Premiership, Jennings said belief remains strong within the squad.
“We’re always confident. Every game we believe we can win. We know we’re a big club with great players and staff, so we just want to keep turning up and winning games because the fans deserve it.”
