Sydney FC have surged into the Top Six after a monumental 1-0 victory over Waratah Cup finalists Sydney United 58 in rainy conditions at home on Friday night, marking their fourth win from their last six matches.

Zac Fowler’s second-half strike proved the difference between the two sides, with the Sky Blues producing yet another disciplined defensive performance to secure the result despite finishing the match with just 32% possession.

Sydney United 58 dominated the early proceedings but were unable to find the finishing touch. Mason Wells was involved in the 8th minute when he produced a delicate run down the sideline before forcing the ball off Ethan Dyer for a corner.

One minute later, Kyle Cimenti’s weaving run opened up space before his effort took a deflection. The visitors continued to press, and in the 16th minute Leroy Jennings unleashed a dangerous long-range strike that was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Alexander Zaverdinos.

From the resulting corner, Adrian Vlastelica met the delivery perfectly but headed inches over the crossbar, continuing a series of near misses for Sydney United 58. Their next opportunity came in the 23rd minute when Carlos De Oliveira was unable to connect cleanly with Bailey Rule’s cross across the face of goal.

Against the run of play in the 24th minute, Reef Farias saw a shot for Sydney FC drift just wide of the far post, before Caelan Marshall-Witte delivered a dangerous ball into the area in the 27th minute that was cleared by a composed visiting defence.

Chances continued to fall for the visitors, and in the 42nd minute Wells forced another save from Zaverdinos after a well-struck free kick. Just before half-time, Sydney United 58 came even closer when Cimenti’s header from close range rattled the crossbar and bounced back into play.

In the 56th minute, Koya Nakano saw his effort comfortably gathered by Zaverdinos, before Wells again tested the Sydney FC defence in the 61st minute with a free kick that was cleared. The rebound fell to De Oliveira, whose powerful follow-up effort was also denied by the Sydney FC keeper.

Despite the pressure, it was the hosts who broke the deadlock in the 67th minute. Zac Fowler drove forward, beating both Liam McGing and Adam Pavlesic before calmly slotting the ball into the far corner to give Sydney FC the lead.

De Oliveira had a chance to respond in the 76th minute but fired wide, summing up a frustrating night for the visitors.

Sydney FC coach Jim Van Weeren praised his side’s resilience after the match as the Sky Blues continued to pick up big points against Premiership chasing opposition.

“I feel happy for the players because it wasn’t easy against a decent opposition team.

“We rode some luck in the first half when we could have been down, but sometimes that’s what you need and at the other end our guys converted their chances,” Van Weeren said.

“For us today’s result is not only a great development opportunity for our players, but will also do them wonders psychologically as well.

“We’ve beaten a heavyweight of this league who put us under pressure and we held them out. It will also help them in their future careers.

“Our defence is also a direct result of the way the boys train. They are desperate and want to win. Being competitive is important and that transfers through to our results.”

It was a tough pill to swallow for the visitors who, with a win, would have been a point off first position prior to APIA Leichhardt FC playing this weekend.

United 58 will now turn its attentions to the Waratah Cup Final next Wednesday night at Valentine Sports Park where they hope to put this result behind them as they push to lift the first season’s first piece of silverware against APIA with kick-off set for 7pm.
