NWS Spirit FC strengthened their push for a place in the finals with a deserved 2-0 victory over the Wollongong Wolves at Christie Park on Saturday night.

A first-half brace from Shoki Yoshida proved decisive as NWS Spirit inflicted a fifth consecutive defeat on the out-of-form Wolves, who remain clinging to a top-six position despite a much-improved second-half performance.

NWS Spirit FC entered the match desperate to keep in touch with the top six, with just one win in their last five games, while the Wolves horrible run of form has seen them suffer four straight losses and clinging to a spot in the top six.

Both sides made a fast start to the match with end-to-end football being played, with the Wolves nearly taking the lead in the 6th minute when new signing Yuto Fujita launched a rocket of a shot from distance that rattled the crossbar.

Despite the rain starting to fall, the Wolves and NWS Spirit were showing good attacking intent early with Fujita a constant threat following his mid-week transfer from Sydney Olympic FC.

NWS Spirit started to look dangerous and took the lead in the 15th minute when a low, hard cross from the right by Riku Kobayashi flashed across the face of goal that was bundled home by Shoki Yoshida in the six yard box.

NWS Spirit were beginning to dominant the contest and doubled their lead in the 21st minute after a through ball from Sam Armson was missed by the Wolves defence as goalkeeper Daniel Solsky rushed out of his box but failed to collect the ball. Yoshida was involved again as his run distracted Solsky who was unable to gather the ball as it went past him and into the empty net, with Yoshida being credited with the goal after he slid and got a slight touch on the ball.

Fujita was looking lively for the Wolves as he unleashed another shot from distance in the 25th minute that went just wide following a good first time pass from defender Dylan Ryan.

NWS Spirit were causing the Wolves numerous problems with their high-press as Wollongong were finding it difficult to get out of their own half.

NWS Spirit continued to probe with Kosta Petratos constantly finding space in midfield and creating chances with Solsky being kept busy in the Wolves goal.

Solsky was called into action in the 40th minute when a cross-turned-shot by Aiden Mostofi from out wide on the left was acrobatically saved as the Wolves goalkeeper got a hand to the ball and pushed it over the crossbar.

Petratos went close to adding a third goal for NWS Spirit on the stroke of half-time with his low, hard shot forcing Solsky into a diving save after a nice ball from Armson.

The first half came to a close with NWS Spirit having eight shots with six on target, while the Wolves failed to have any shots on target.

New Wolves signing Hugo Cornish and young gun Dylan King were brought on at half-time for the Wolves as Wollongong went in search of reducing the two goal margin.

The Wolves made a fast start to the second half, keeping possession well as midfielder Kazuya Yamamura came close to opening his side’s account in the 56th minute with an audacious attempt to chip NWS Spirit goalkeeper Jay Coates that went just over the crossbar.

Cornish had a huge chance to make an immediate impact for the Wolves when he found himself on the end of a Ryan cross on the edge of the six yard box in the 63rd minute. However he failed to hit the target as his shot sailed high and well over the crossbar.

The new signing was causing all sorts of problems for the NWS Spirit defence and he went close to scoring for the Wolves only a few minutes later when he was on the end of a cross from the right from Marcus Beattie. Cornish got in front of his defender and got a shot away, however the ball went just wide of the NWS Spirit goal.

The Wolves were dominating the contest as they searched for goals with King going close in the 77th minute with his shot fizzing across goal as it sailed just wide of the back post.

NWS Spirit started to sit deep and nearly hit the Wolves on the counter in the 81st minute when Riku Kobayashi forced Solsky into a strong save with his legs as he kept his side in the game.

The Wolves continued to throw numbers forward as they desperately searched for goals, however NWS Spirit held firm to secure an important 2-0 win as they look to keep their finals football ambitions alive, while the Wolves poor form continues with a fifth straight loss.

The Wolves had big target man Lachlan Scott as a huge absence in the side who was serving suspension as his presence could well have caused more issues for the Spirit defence.
