Two stunning late goals sealed all three points for Sutherland Sharks FC as they defeated UNSW FC 3-1 at the Village Green.

Both UNSW FC and the Sutherland Sharks tested each other’s defences early, with long balls used to try and exploit space in behind.

A solid early chance for UNSW FC came via a well-weighted cross from Corby Fowler to Sean Woods, but the delivery was just beyond his reach.

Richard Shoueiki was heavily involved early, applying constant pressure on UNSW goalkeeper Tristan Prendergast and forcing the custodian into a scramble 14 minutes in to deny a clear run at goal.

Shoueiki threatened again soon after with a similar run, but Prendergast was again alert to block the danger at the last moment.

Sutherland Sharks took the lead in the 25th minute, with a brilliant driving run from Jordan Perez setting up a clinical finish from Shoueiki, a goal that had been building throughout the opening stages.

Play was briefly halted after Jyden Harb was shown a yellow card for a late challenge on Brendan Gan, who remained down clutching his ankle for an extended period.

UNSW FC levelled just before half-time, with a well-delivered corner finding the head of Liam Wood, who guided the ball past Nizic into the net.

Sutherland Sharks’ Jamie Percevski had a good opportunity early in the second half, but his header was comfortably held by Prendergast.

At the other end, Oliver Pufflet produced a dangerous run down the sideline for UNSW FC before his cross was cleared by the Sharks defence.

Jack Fulton made an immediate impact off the bench for UNSW FC, with a powerful strike that narrowly cleared the crossbar.

Just as the match looked destined for a draw, Sutherland Sharks found another gear.

Tariq Maia impressed immediately after coming on, delivering a brilliant assist for Jordan Perez in the 86th minute, who finished clinically to restore the lead.

The Sharks weren’t finished there, and in the first minute of stoppage time Maia spotted Prendergast off his line and produced a composed long-range lob from near halfway to seal the 3-1 victory in spectacular fashion.
