Six-goal thriller as points shared between Wolves and St George City

After five consecutive defeats, the Wollongong Wolves showed plenty of character to fight back from a two-goal deficit and earn a dramatic 3-3 draw with St George City at Macedonia Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Wolves looked destined for a sixth straight loss before a spirited second-half comeback turned the contest into an entertaining end-to-end battle, with both sides ultimately sharing the points.
The Wolves started the match at a fast pace with midfielder Flynn Madden having a shot cleared off the line in the 9th minute after a nice lay-off from Hugo Cornish.
However, it didn’t take long for St George City FA to grow into the game as the visitors took the lead in the 12th minute thanks to Malik Amin after a defensive mix up between Marcus Beattie and Jake Shaked. Amin did brilliantly to chase down a long ball and fought hard to win the ball from the Wolves players and calmly slotted his shot past goalkeeper Daniel Solsky from the edge of the box.
Wolves captain Lachlan Scott was beginning to cause trouble for the St George City FA defence and his cross in the 26th minute presented Hugo Cornish with a huge chance to get Wollongong back in the game; however Cornish sent his header over the bar.
Cornish went close again a few minutes later with another header that sailed wide after a cross from Yuto Fujita following some neat play with Scott.
St George City FA doubled their lead in the 41st minute with a well-placed shot in the bottom corner from Louis Khoury after some fancy footwork in the box took him around the Wolves defence.
The first half came to a close with St George City FA in control and having 10 shots with five on target, while the Wolves had three shots with none on target.
The Wolves made a fast start to the second half and scored in the 50th minute when Cornish unleashed a rocket of a left-foot shot from outside the box that rattled the cross bar and appeared to bounce over the line. Captain Scott then reacted quickly as he headed the rebound past St George City FA goalkeeper Jack Kenny to get the Wolves back in the game.
Substitute Sebastian Hernandez made an immediate impact for the Wolves in the 69th minute as his cross from the right was met perfectly on the head by Yuto Fujita who scored his first goal for the club.
The Wolves went close to taking the lead a few minutes later when a delicate lob from midfielder Kazuya Yamamura was brilliantly saved by Kenny who got a hand to the ball and pushed it over the crossbar.
Wollongong were dominating possession and took the lead in the 77th minute when Fujita went on a run and beat numerous St George City FA players and unleashed a curling shot into the top corner.
The game took another turn in the 81st minute as St George City FA levelled the scoring when substitute Theph Theph bundled the ball over the line following a corner.
Wolves defender Sebastian Duarte went close to giving Wollongong the lead in the 89th minute when his header from a corner was brilliantly saved by Kenny who dived high and got a hand on the ball and pushed it over the crossbar.
The Wolves continued to push for the winner and sent players forward, however St George City FA held strong in defence with the game ending in an entertaining 3-3 draw.
Wolves coach Julio Miranda said he was proud of his team as they fought hard and never gave up.
“The guys showed a lot of fight to come back from two goals down and there was a lot of positives we can take from the match. We could have won the game in the end.”
St George City FA goalkeeper Jack Kenny said it was a hard fought match played in difficult conditions.
“The Wollongong away trip is always hard and it is disappointing to be two goals up and only come away with a point. It was one of those games with the rain, cold weather and it was a tough game.”
