Kimura’s Brilliance Caps Memorable Manly Comeback

A moment of pure brilliance from substitute Ayumu Kimura inspired Manly United FC to a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Sutherland Sharks FC at Cromer Park on Saturday night, extending the home side’s unbeaten run to five matches.

Trailing 1-0 with just over 10 minutes remaining, Manly produced a stirring late fightback through Darcy Burgess before Kimura’s extraordinary piece of skill and composed finish completed a remarkable turnaround that left the Sharks heartbroken as they cling to a top six spot.

Both sides entered the contest in strong form, with Manly unbeaten in their previous four matches and Sutherland riding the momentum of three consecutive victories as they continued their push towards the top four.

Manly began on the front foot and almost found an early breakthrough in the 11th minute when Darcy Burgess drove an effort narrowly wide after creating space on the edge of the area.

Sutherland gradually settled into the contest and should have opened the scoring four minutes later. Jordan Perez whipped a dangerous ball across the face of goal that somehow evaded both his teammates and the scrambling Manly defence.

The match developed into a fiercely contested midfield battle, with neither side able to carve out clear-cut opportunities despite plenty of endeavour from both teams.

Benjamin Koop almost produced something special for the hosts in the 33rd minute. The striker danced past several defenders with dazzling footwork before curling a long-range effort just beyond the far post.

The Sharks finished the opening half strongly and came within inches of taking the lead just before the break. Nicholas Olsen’s dangerous free-kick caused confusion in the Manly penalty area after goalkeeper Mackenzie Syron spilled the ball. Tariq Maia pounced on the loose ball, but Syron reacted brilliantly to recover and deny the rebound with his legs.

Despite enjoying more of the attacking possession, Manly went into the interval unable to register a shot on target.

The hosts resumed with renewed intent after the restart.

Burgess again tested the Sharks’ defence with a strike from distance before Kakeru Ono forced Danijel Nizic into a sharp save at his near post from a cleverly struck free-kick.

Manly continued to press, and Jasper Chipman’s inviting cross was flicked narrowly wide by Burgess as the pressure mounted.

However, it was Sutherland who struck first against the run of play.

A handball inside the penalty area by Aaron O’Driscoll gifted the visitors a spot-kick in the 59th minute, with Nicholas Olsen making no mistake. Although Syron guessed correctly and got a hand to the effort, the penalty carried too much power as it flew into the top corner.

Buoyed by the breakthrough, the Sharks nearly doubled their advantage moments later when Thijs Van Amerongen fired narrowly wide of the far post.

Facing defeat, Manly threw numbers forward in search of an equaliser and were finally rewarded in the 81st minute.

Following a goalmouth scramble from a corner, Burgess reacted quickest to hammer home from close range and ignite Cromer Park.

Just three minutes later came the moment that defined the evening.

Douglas John’s long ball forward appeared routine until substitute Ayumu Kimura produced a breathtaking first touch, cushioning the ball with a back-heeled volley that completely took the Sutherland defence out of the contest. Bursting through on goal, the Japanese playmaker kept his composure before sliding the ball beyond Nizic to complete an unforgettable turnaround.

Kimura’s moment of individual brilliance proved decisive as Manly expertly managed the closing stages to secure a hard-earned three points and extend their impressive unbeaten run.

Manly United now turn their attention to an away clash against Sydney FC in Round 24, while Sutherland Sharks will look to bounce back when they host Sydney Olympic FC next Saturday night.
