Wada Wonder Strike Settles Top-Four Thriller Between United 58 and Rockdale

Tomoki Wada’s moment of brilliance proved the difference as Sydney United 58 secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Rockdale Ilinden in a thrilling Round 23 encounter between two of the National Premier Leagues Men’s NSW competition’s top-four sides.

In an electric contest at Sydney United Sports Centre, both teams created plenty of opportunities, but it was Wada’s perfectly executed free-kick that separated the two rivals. The result sees United 58 continue their strong run of form, with the side now unbeaten in five of their last six matches.

Rockdale started the brighter of the two sides, with Brendan Cholakian causing problems early. The midfielder found space to deliver two dangerous passes into the box, both of which were cleared by Sydney United defenders Koya Nakano and Liam McGing.

Moments later, Moudi Najjar tested goalkeeper Adam Pavlesic in the seventh minute, firing towards the near post and forcing the United shot-stopper to push the effort behind.

Mid-season signing James Temelkovski was next to threaten, with his relentless pressure almost creating an opening when his chase forced Pavlesic into an awkward clearance into the Boka Stand. Two minutes later, Temelkovski went even closer, seeing his powerful run and shot take a deflection off Bailey Rule, strike the post and rebound back into Rule’s path.

Sydney United gradually found their rhythm, with Mason Wells attempting to spark his side into action. The left-back forced Levi Kaye into a save in the 19th minute before Mathieu Cordier produced a brilliant goal-saving challenge to deny Wells in the 32nd minute.

Rockdale goalkeeper Kaye remained busy throughout the opening half, producing another important intervention when he punched away Wada’s dangerous corner in the 37th minute, ensuring the sides entered the break level at 0-0.

United 58 continued to push after the restart, with Wada testing Rockdale again in the 48th minute as his long-range effort took a significant deflection off Lachlan Griffiths and changed direction.

Cholakian responded for Rockdale in the 55th minute, curling a long-range effort towards goal that briefly unsettled Pavlesic before the goalkeeper gathered safely.

The home side began to gain control as the half progressed, with Leroy Jennings and Carlos De Oliveira finding space in attacking areas, although neither opportunity resulted in the breakthrough they were searching for.

That breakthrough finally arrived in the 66th minute. Jennings used his experience to win a free-kick just outside the penalty area after being fouled by Cholakian, and Wada, a former Ilinden player himself, stepped up to produce a moment of quality. The Japanese attacker curled his effort over the wall and beyond Kaye, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance and sending the home crowd into celebration.

Rockdale continued to fight for an equaliser, with Griffiths making a crucial interception to stop another dangerous Wada delivery in the 76th minute. Farah Koko also came to the rescue late, recovering after a costly turnover to prevent United from extending their lead.

In the end, Sydney United 58 held firm to claim a hard-fought victory that keeps them firmly in the race for a top-two finish, while both sides remain serious contenders heading into the business end of the season.
