Bosnjak Rescues Point As Olympic Battle To Draw Against Sharks

Sydney Olympic earned a valuable point in their battle for NPL Men’s NSW survival after fighting out a 1-1 draw against Sutherland Sharks at Seymour Shaw Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Sharks looked on track to claim another important home victory after Nick Olsen fired them ahead inside five minutes, but Olympic showed plenty of resilience to fight back through Samuel Bosnjak’s second-half equaliser and leave with a share of the points.
With their season on the line, Olympic arrived knowing every point mattered, but they faced a Sutherland side full of confidence and determined to continue their recent momentum. What followed was an intense contest full of chances, big saves and late drama, with both sides having opportunities to claim all three points.
Sutherland made the perfect start when a neat interchange between Takumi Ofuka and Olsen allowed the forward to break into the penalty area. Shaping to cross, Olsen instead fired the ball into the near corner from a tight angle, beating the Olympic goalkeeper to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead.
It was a familiar feeling for Olympic, who have often found themselves chasing games early this season. However, their circumstances meant they had already entered the match needing to attack, and there was still plenty of time to find a response.
The Sharks continued to create opportunities, with Daniel Nizic forced into action to deny Panayioti Armenakas before Kurto was called upon moments later, producing a brilliant save to keep out Jordan Perez’s thunderous free-kick.
The intensity soon boiled over, with a brief melee resulting in several yellow cards as both sides showed the importance of the occasion.
Sutherland came agonisingly close to doubling their advantage when Perez headed goalward from close range, only for Kurto to react instinctively and tip the effort onto the crossbar with a stunning save.
The Sharks’ pressing continued for long periods, forcing Olympic to defend deep and attempt to counter-attack from their own half.
Despite being under pressure, Olympic continued to search for opportunities, with Kaan Nizam going close in the final minute of the half when his long-range effort bounced awkwardly in front of Nizic, who did well to gather.
Despite their efforts, Olympic went into the break trailing 1-0.
The visitors started the second half positively, firing over the crossbar inside the opening 90 seconds, but were soon forced back into defensive positions as Sutherland continued to threaten.
The game began to open up, with the roles eventually reversing as the Sharks dropped deeper and looked to counter-attack.
Olympic grew in confidence, knowing the one-goal margin kept them firmly in the contest, and their persistence was eventually rewarded.
In the 60th minute, Samuel Bosnjak levelled the scores after getting on the end of an inch-perfect cross from Armenakas, giving Olympic a deserved equaliser.
The goal shifted momentum, with Olympic suddenly looking the more dangerous side. Bosnjak almost completed a quick turnaround moments later, but Nizic produced a strong save to deny his header.
Sutherland were forced to regroup, with Olympic pushing forward in search of a winner.
At the other end, Tariq Maia tested Kurto, who produced another full-stretch save to tip the effort over the crossbar and keep his side level.
The Sharks introduced Richard Shoueiki from the bench, and the substitute almost made an immediate impact. Bonilla drove into the box before cutting the ball back for Shoueiki, whose strike crashed against the woodwork and away to safety.
Sutherland continued to push late, bringing on Danny Choi as another attacking option as they searched for the winning goal.
The Sharks threw numbers forward in the closing stages, but Olympic stood firm as both sides battled through a tense finish.
Deep into stoppage time, Bonilla had a golden opportunity to steal all three points when he latched onto a long ball from Nizic and fired towards goal, only for his effort to flash narrowly wide.
At full-time, Sutherland were left frustrated by their missed chances, while Sydney Olympic could take confidence from a determined performance and a valuable point in their fight against relegation.
In the end, a 1-1 draw was a fair reflection of a spirited contest between two sides desperate for points.
