Wanderers Fire Four Past Spirit To Keep Finals Hopes Alive

Western Sydney Wanderers have kept their finals hopes alive after producing a dominant 4-0 victory over NWS Spirit FC at Christie Park on Saturday evening in the NPL Men’s NSW Match of the Round.

A stunning late first-half surge followed by two goals within the opening seven minutes of the second half proved decisive, as the Wanderers claimed a crucial three points to remain within reach of the Top Six.

Both sides entered the contest searching for a much-needed victory after difficult runs of form. With Spirit and Wanderers occupying mid-table positions and having collected just three wins between them across their previous 10 matches, the opening stages reflected the evenly matched nature of the contest.

Both teams enjoyed periods of possession, but neither could find the decisive pass in the final third.

The first real attacking threat arrived in the 35th minute when Wanderers striker Johnny Pavlovic found space on the edge of the penalty area and fired towards goal. The effort did not force Spirit goalkeeper Jay Coates into a save, but the young shot-stopper was relieved to see it roll narrowly past his near post.

Just when it appeared both sides would enter the break level, the Wanderers produced a stunning two-minute burst to completely change the complexion of the match.

The opening goal came through a dangerous delivery from Emile Katrib towards Golden Boot leader Awan Lual. Lual managed to get the slightest touch on the cross, with the final touch coming off Spirit defender Owen Henderson and finding the back of the net to give the visitors the lead.

Less than a minute later, the Wanderers doubled their advantage from a set piece.

Anderson Back delivered a looping free-kick into the penalty area, where Oscar Morrison rose highest to powerfully head the ball across goal and into the bottom corner, giving the visitors a two-goal advantage heading into half-time.

The Wanderers continued their momentum after the break and extended their lead just minutes into the second half.

Capitalising on a misplaced Spirit pass, Joshua Cetinic intercepted the ball before combining with Pavlovic in a rapid counter-attacking move. Cetinic received the return pass and calmly finished to make it 3-0.

Spirit searched for a way back into the contest but were unable to break down a disciplined Wanderers defence.

The visitors then sealed the result with a fourth goal. Pearson Kasawaya capitalised on another Spirit turnover before threading a pass through to Lual, who made no mistake from close range to score his 18th goal of the season.

The result further strengthened the Wanderers’ push towards finals football, while Spirit were left to reflect on a difficult evening at home.

The match came to an early conclusion after Wanderers goalkeeper Lachlan Allen suffered a serious head knock in the 80th minute. After receiving extended treatment for approximately 10 minutes, both teams and the match officials agreed to end the contest as the clock reached the 90-minute mark.

The Wanderers walked away with a statement victory, while Awan Lual continued to dominate sitting atop of the NPL Men’s NSW Golden Boot charts as the Red and Black remain firmly in the finals conversation.
