Clinical Sharks hold off Wolves to tighten grip on top four
Sutherland Sharks made the most of their opportunities to secure a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Wollongong Wolves at Seymour Shaw on Saturday afternoon, despite the visitors creating numerous chances throughout the contest.
The victory strengthens the Sharks’ hold on a top-four spot, while the Wolves’ fourth straight defeat leaves their finals hopes hanging by a thread.
The Wolves made a fast start with Flynn Madden and Yuto Fujita both firing shots over the bar in the opening exchanges.
Fujita was causing headaches for Sutherland and forced a strong save from Sharks goalkeeper Danijel Nizic in the 16th minute, following a neat back heal from captain Lachlan Scott and a strong run from defender Dylan Ryan.
The Wollongong midfield started to get a hold of the game, with the Sharks missing the suspended Brendan Gan who has been an influential member of the Sutherland team during the season.
The Sharks began to settle into the match with new signing Diego Bonilla blazing wide in the 23rd minute, and soon after they took the lead thanks to Seung-Joo Choi.
The winger found himself with time and space on the edge of the box and curled a low, left-foot shot past Wolves goalkeeper Max Cunial after receiving a well-placed lay off from Bonilla to give Sutherland a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute.
The goal sparked the Sharks into life with Choi starting to look dangerous after his third goal of the season, and his first since Round 20 in late June.
The Wolves should have been level in the 39th minute when winger Alex Masciovecchio used his speed and skill to get past Sutherland defender Thijs Van Amerongen on the left flank and played a brilliant outside-of-the-foot ball across the goal. Fujita was unmarked in front of goal, however the ball bounced at an awkward height and Fujita missed the ball as it sailed past the far post.
Wollongong were creating chances as the first-half drew to a close with Scott firing a shot on target that hit Fujita as he tried to get out of the way.
The first-half came to end with the match in the balance, with the Sharks having three shots with one on target; while the Wolves had seven shots, with one on target.
The second-half started with both sides having early chances as the match turned into a free-flowing contest with the Sharks going close in the 58th minute when Yianni Nicolaou whipped in a dangerous ball from the right that Cunial managed to get a hand to, just as Sharks striker Bonilla was lurking in the box.
The Wolves had a good chance to get back into the game in the 69th minute when winger Sebastian Hernandez found space on the right and put in a cross that forced Nizic into a strong save as he did well to get a hand to the ball, just before the Wolves attackers pounced on the cross.
The Sharks stunned the Wolves and doubled their lead only a few minutes later when substitute Tye McGowan rifled a left-foot shot high into the net from close range after the ball fell to him following a shot from Bonilla that was blocked by Wolves defender Sebastian Duarte.
Confidence was high for the Sharks and substitute Richard Shoueiki tried to make an immediate impact as he had a shot from distance that sailed over the bar.
The Wolves got back in the game in the 81st minute when defender Banri Kanaizumi scored with a neat finish past Nizic from close range after Scott did brilliantly as he received the ball, turned, held off two defenders and laid off a pass for Kanaizumi.
Wollongong went close to scoring an equalising goal in the closing stages when young guns Lucas Trajcevski and Dylan King combined brilliantly with King getting a shot away on target, however the experience of Sharks centre-back Matthew Jurman saved the day as he blocked the shot and kept Sutherland in the lead.
The Wolves continued to look dangerous as they chased the game in search of goals, however the Sutherland defence remained strong as they held on for a 2-1 win.
The result moves Sutherland six points clear of Rockdale as they aim to lock down fourth spot on the NPL Men’s NSW ladder and secure a place in the Australian Championship; while the Wolves’ woes continue with a fourth loss in a row that sees them lose further ground on the top six and with plenty of work to do if they want to play finals football.
