Goalless At Barton Park As St George FC And APIA Share The Spoils
NPL Men’s NSW League leaders APIA Leichhardt were held to a goalless draw by relegation threatened St George FC at Barton Park in Round 27, with the result ultimately benefiting the visitors more as the Premiership race moves towards its conclusion.
APIA travelled to Barton Park looking to extend their lead at the top of the table and take another step towards securing the Premiership, while St George were desperate for three points to ease their relegation concerns.
In the end, it was the Saints who were left to rue a missed opportunity after producing a defiant and battling performance against the competition leaders.
APIA began in measured fashion, allowing St George to push forward during the opening minutes and create a couple of half-chances without finding the breakthrough.
As they have shown throughout the season, the visitors were comfortable absorbing pressure before looking to strike quickly on the counter-attack.
Seiya Kambayashi was involved in one such move, lashing an effort narrowly wide of the woodwork.
By the midway point of the opening half, APIA had gained the ascendancy and began forcing St George deeper into their own half with incisive football, neat passing and intelligent movement.
However, the Saints continued to look dangerous whenever they were able to win possession and move forward.
With their position near the bottom of the table, a draw would provide some assistance but would not be enough to ease their relegation concerns, and St George continued to push for all three points.
News then filtered through that Marconi Stallions had suffered defeat, meaning a victory for APIA could potentially have seen them secure the Premiership as early as next weekend.
The visitors almost found the breakthrough, but St George goalkeeper Oliver Kalac once again proved his worth to keep the scores level.
At the other end, Chris McStay went agonisingly close with an effort that curled just wide.
The contest remained finely balanced, with both sides committed to finding the decisive goal.
McStay was shown a yellow card with five minutes remaining in the first half, a booking that could have significant consequences for St George as he is set to miss the remainder of the campaign through suspension after accumulating three yellow cards.
The sides went into the break level at 0-0, with honours even.
The second half developed into a bruising and fiercely contested encounter as both teams recognised the importance of the result.
Every tackle was fiercely contested, every ball was fought for and both sides continued to search for the opening goal.
Chances came and went at either end, with both goalkeepers called upon to keep their sides in the contest.
A draw, however, would always favour APIA more than St George, who increasingly looked the more dangerous side as the second half progressed.
St George goalkeeper James Husoy, who had received lengthy treatment during the first half, required further attention in the 68th minute after appearing to suffer a hamstring issue.
After treatment, Husoy was deemed fit to continue, with substitute goalkeeper Sebastian La Luz remaining on standby.
APIA introduced Jack Stewart as they searched for a breakthrough, with the forward looking for his eighth goal of the season.
He came close with a powerful effort from the edge of the area, but the shot flew wide as the visitors struggled to create clear opportunities amid St George’s growing dominance.
With the clock ticking down, St George made their final changes in search of the winning goal.
Japanese import Toshiki Makimoto and Harry Keys were introduced for Justin Poon and Nikola Skotaric, while Alex Denmead also entered the contest for Jordan Segreto as both sides emptied their benches during the closing stages.
APIA were reduced to 10 men in the ninth minute of stoppage time when Kyle Shaw was shown a straight red card for bringing down a St George attacker.
With the danger still to come, Shaw opted to stop the attack rather than allow the forward to continue towards goal.
St George pushed desperately for the winner, knowing that anything less than three points would leave their relegation battle increasingly difficult.
Despite throwing everything into the closing stages, the Saints could not find the decisive breakthrough.
The final whistle confirmed a goalless draw — a result that will feel like two points dropped for St George but one that keeps APIA firmly in control of their Premiership destiny.
The league leaders remain in position to potentially secure the title next weekend should Marconi drop points and APIA collect another victory, while St George will be left wondering what might have been after a courageous performance against the competition leaders.
