Sharks Held By Young Sky Blues In Tense 1-1 Draw
Sutherland Sharks and Sydney FC shared the points in a hard-fought 1-1 draw in Round 27 of the NPL Men’s NSW competition, with both goals coming early in the second half after a tight and scoreless opening period.
Zac Fowler opened the scoring for Sydney FC before Jordan Perez produced a superb free-kick to restore parity for the Sharks, who were left frustrated after missing an opportunity to take another significant step towards securing an Australian Championship position.
The opening chance arrived in the seventh minute when Sydney FC midfielder Mitchell Glasson found Taye Hedley, whose effort drifted narrowly wide.
Sutherland responded five minutes later when Diego Bonilla delivered a cross from the by-line towards Brendan Gan, but the Sharks attacker headed just wide of the target.
The opening 20 minutes were cagey, with neither side willing to concede space as both defences remained well organised.
Sutherland then created a golden opportunity to take the lead when Nicholas Olsen capitalised on a Sydney FC giveaway before finding Yianni Nicolaou in space.
Nicolaou raced forward but could only fire inches over the crossbar.
Sydney FC had one final opportunity before the break when Hedley delivered a dangerous free-kick, but Sutherland goalkeeper Danijel Nizic collected comfortably to ensure the sides went into half-time level.
The second half immediately brought more action, with Sydney FC opening the scoring in the 49th minute.
A long ball forward found Fowler, who showed excellent strength to get between two defenders before producing a composed finish. Nizic got a hand to the effort but could not prevent the ball from finding the back of the net.
Sutherland responded strongly and deservedly found an equaliser in the 59th minute.
Perez stepped up from outside the penalty area and produced a brilliant free-kick that flew directly into the back of the net, sending the home crowd into celebration on a cold winter’s evening at Seymour Shaw.
Sydney almost regained the lead just a minute later when Fowler attempted an audacious lob from distance, only to see the effort bounce back off the crossbar.
Sutherland continued to search for the winner, with Tye McGowan creating space on the right in the 68th minute before forcing Sydney goalkeeper Jared Williams into an important save.
Olsen then tried his luck from distance in the 75th minute, but his effort drifted wide.
Williams was called upon again shortly afterwards, producing an excellent save to deny Bonilla and keep the scores level as the Sharks continued to push forward.
Sutherland’s late pressure almost paid off in the 89th minute when Perez delivered a dangerous cross from the left that flashed across the face of goal, but nobody was there to apply the finishing touch.
Olsen then delivered a free-kick towards Bonilla in the 90th minute, with the Sharks attacker attempting an acrobatic volley that sailed over the crossbar.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-1 draw, leaving Sutherland with a point but frustrated at the missed opportunity to claim all three.
Following the match, Sharks coach David Perkovic acknowledged the positives from his side’s performance while admitting the result was disappointing.
“You are never fully happy with a draw, especially as I thought we dominated the first half and Nizic didn’t have to make a save,” Perkovic said.
“We didn’t really take our chances tonight and we did have some really good ones. Last week we probably didn’t deserve all three points but we got them, and this week we did deserve them but came away with a draw.”
“Our general play in the first half was the best it has been all season, including our movement of the ball around the field and our defensive marking, where we really pinned Sydney FC in their half.”
Perkovic also praised the support from the home crowd as the Sharks continue their push for fourth place.
“The crowd here at home really gets behind our players and we are in a good run of form at the moment. Hopefully, we can keep that going for the remainder of our matches and secure that fourth position.”
Sydney FC coach Jimmy Van Weeren was also pleased with the performance of his young side.
“The first half was relatively even but they probably had more shots,” Van Weeren said.
“We made it hard for them and didn’t give them real clear-cut chances throughout the game.
“We have a young side and I am really proud of the boys. Sutherland Sharks are doing something that is really good for the game here and it’s good to see so many people supporting the club here, but it’s also good for our young players to feel that great atmosphere.”
Van Weeren also highlighted the performance of goalkeeper Jared Williams, who is still under 18.
“Our goalkeeper Jared Williams, who is not even 18 years old and was playing against one of the league’s heavyweights tonight, had a really positive performance that I think is worth acknowledging.”
