Blacktown City Held To Goalless Draw As Finals Push Fades
Blacktown City FC’s finals hopes are hanging by a thread after they could only take one point from a 0-0 draw against UNSW FC at a chilly Valentine Sports Park on Sunday afternoon.
Both sides looked to attack quickly in the opening stages, but neither was able to gain a clear upper hand as the contest settled into a tight affair.
Oliver Puflett created the first genuine opportunity for UNSW in the 12th minute, collecting the ball in traffic just outside the penalty area before turning quickly and getting a shot away, but his effort went wide.
Blacktown City responded almost immediately through Maksim Jez, who met a cross from Jak O’Brien in front of goal but could only send his effort over the crossbar.
Alou Kuol was working well alongside O’Brien in attack, winning an excellent aerial battle with former Blacktown City player Lachlan Campbell, but he was unable to find the space to do anything further with the opportunity.
Jyden Harb was once again proving a creative force for UNSW, producing chances from nothing and forcing Blacktown goalkeeper Cayden Henderson into an excellent save with a dangerous effort.
Blacktown’s bench was left furious late in the first half when no foul was awarded after Kuol produced a brilliant individual run through several defenders before going down inside the penalty area following a challenge from UNSW goalkeeper Tristan Prendergast.
UNSW started the second half strongly, with Harb again leading the charge.
An early free-kick just minutes after the restart curled towards the waiting gloves of Prendergast, while another opportunity a minute later saw Harb’s effort, following a shot from Puflett, take a deflection and end up in the same hands.
Harb went close again with a beautifully curled effort towards goal, but the ball did not bend enough to find the back of the net.
Blacktown City finally created a clear opportunity of their own in the 55th minute when Kodai Tanaka delivered an excellent cross towards the diving Jez, but his header went straight at Prendergast.
Tanaka produced another dangerous delivery later in the half, this time from a corner towards Nathan Grimaldi, but the defender’s effort drifted just wide.
UNSW had the better of the chances as the half progressed, with Henderson and Prendergast both playing their part in keeping the scores level.
Blacktown City pushed desperately for a winner in the dying stages as they looked to keep their finals hopes alive, with Kuol leading the charge, but they were unable to find the decisive breakthrough.
The result leaves Blacktown City with plenty of work to do in the final stages of the season if they are to keep their finals dream alive.
Following the match, Blacktown City coach Mark Crittenden admitted that the club’s current situation away from their home at Landen Stadium has had an impact on recent performances.
“It’s not the same,” Crittenden said.
“Having to go elsewhere to train and things like that, not being back at home hasn’t been easy, but obviously it’s no excuse.”
