NWS Spirit FC have taken a major step towards securing finals football in 2026 after a tense and fiery 1-0 victory over SD Raiders FC at Valentine Sports Park.

From kick-off, the contest felt destined for drama, and there was plenty of it during an eventful first half.

SD Raiders had an excellent opportunity just five minutes in when Luka Knezevic picked up the ball at the top of the box after a decent cross had been spilled back into his path.

However, there were plenty of NWS Spirit defenders throwing themselves in the way to block the effort.

Spirit forward Kosta Petratos then found himself in the referee’s book early, receiving a yellow card for a high kick that caught Cooper Hanagan in the head inside the NWS penalty area.

SD Raiders had another injury concern just minutes later when Martin Fernandez took the ball to the face, with the physios taking their time to ensure he was safe to continue.

Noah Peacock was heavily involved for Spirit, fighting his way through the SD Raiders defence before seeing his effort deflected behind.

Spirit eventually found the breakthrough in the 34th minute following a brilliant counter-attacking move.

Peacock provided the assist for Ben Duroux, whose initial effort was blocked by the SD Raiders goalkeeper.

However, Duroux reacted quickest to the rebound and made no mistake with the follow-up to put Spirit 1-0 ahead.

The contest continued to produce plenty of talking points.

There were loud calls from the SD Raiders bench in the 38th minute when Knezevic went down inside the penalty area, but referee Thomas Dale immediately waved away the appeals.

Things became even more difficult for the Raiders three minutes later when Noah Chianese was shown a straight red card following an off-the-ball incident with Simon Nicholas.

Chianese briefly pleaded his case before accepting the referee’s decision, while an SD Raiders assistant was also shown a yellow card after continuing to protest the incident.

The second half was just as fiery as the first.

It took only a few minutes for Fernandez to find himself in the book, while Andre Takami was also cautioned following a skirmish between the two sides.

SD Raiders continued searching for an equaliser, with Sebastian Malfara producing a dangerous effort that took a deflection off a Spirit player before going wide.

Malfara was then shown a yellow card of his own for a foul shortly afterwards.

Peacock was next to enter the referee’s notebook after interfering with a free-kick.

Spirit came close to doubling their advantage after producing some excellent team play, with Petratos delivering a dangerous cross towards Riku Kobayashi, but the Japanese attacker could not find the finishing touch.

Corey Kavanagh then had an opportunity of his own, with his strike forcing an excellent save from the SD Raiders goalkeeper.

The visitors continued to battle despite being a man down and continued to look for a way back into the contest.

The match ended with another flashpoint when Cooper Hanagan was shown a yellow card for a foul, leaving SD Raiders with just nine players on the field.

There was little time remaining, however, with the referee bringing the contest to an end shortly afterwards.

The result sees NWS Spirit take another important step towards finals football, while SD Raiders will be left to rue a frustrating night in which they were unable to overcome Spirit despite creating opportunities early in the contest.
