Sydney FC’s Finals Dream Ends With Olympic Draw
Sydney Olympic FC and Sydney FC shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Belmore Sports Ground on Sunday afternoon, with the result ending the Sky Blues’ hopes of playing finals football in 2026.
Sydney FC knew they needed a victory to keep their finals hopes alive and started quickly.
Zac Fowler craned an early header over the crossbar before Samuel Lancaster hooked an effort over.
The Sky Blues continued to push forward, with Corey Cronin meeting the drop of the ball and thrashing an effort wide in the 13th minute.
It was all Sydney FC in the opening half, with Taye Headley weaving into the penalty area before forcing Sydney Olympic goalkeeper Filip Kurto into his first save of the contest.
The hosts gradually worked their way into the game and found some rhythm in the 23rd minute when Marcus Fernandez drove into the box before firing an effort wide.
Fowler came closest for the Sky Blues before the break.
The forward glided past Kurto and fired towards goal, but Joshua Hong was on hand to clear the effort off the line and keep Olympic level.
Sydney Olympic looked determined to spoil Sydney FC’s finals hopes after the restart.
Panayioti Armenakas produced an effort early in the second half that forced Sydney FC goalkeeper Alexander Zaverdinos into a diving save.
However, Sydney FC eventually found the breakthrough in the 56th minute.
A quick counter-attack saw Headley race forward before calmly arrowing his finish into the bottom corner to put the visitors 1-0 ahead.
Sydney Olympic pushed for an equaliser, with Bailey Callaghan going forward and firing an effort over the bar.
The Sky Blues knew a one-goal lead was dangerous and continued hunting for a second.
Substitute Zinadein Ardiansyah was increasingly involved going forward and fired an effort over as Sydney FC looked to put the contest beyond doubt.
Callaghan remained the main threat for Olympic and went close again, with his effort forcing Zaverdinos to punch the ball wide.
The pressure eventually paid off for the hosts in the 82nd minute.
Armenakas knocked down a free-kick into the path of Callaghan, who made no mistake with his finish to bring Olympic level at 1-1.
The hosts almost completed the turnaround moments later.
Olympic countered quickly, with Callaghan again finding himself in a dangerous position before poking his effort straight at Zaverdinos.
Sydney FC pushed forward in the closing stages in search of the winner they desperately needed, but Olympic repelled the late pressure to hold on for a share of the spoils.
The result means Sydney FC miss out on finals football, while Sydney Olympic finish their NPL Men’s NSW campaign with a point but will be playing in the League One Men’s competition in 2027 following its relegation finishing in last position.
Post-match, Sydney FC coach Jimmy Van Weeren reflected on both the result and his side’s season.
“It is a bit disappointing because we created enough chances but didn’t have enough quality to convert them,” Van Weeren said.
“It was in our hands for a moment but it is now out of it, but I think regardless it has been a solid season with a lot of changes across the whole campaign.”
